Brock Lesnar Talks UFC Return, Past Drug Addiction, And His Romantic Side

Ahead of Brock Lesnar’s highly anticipated UFC return at UFC 200, the WWE star sat down with ESPN’s Highly Questionable to discuss several topics, including his past struggles with drugs as a young wrestler and his romantic gestures to his wife.

Lesnar told an old story about a street fight at a bar where someone else grabbed his drinks. He recalls the individual hitting him over the head with a bottle. Without going into detail, the six-foot-three, 265-pound wrestler jovially said that “things ended very quickly.”

Brock also reveals that he finally managed to beat up his big brother at the age of 19, when the two had an alcohol-fuelled argument.

In the candid interview, Brock Lesnar opens up about drug addiction as a young wrestler. The host asked the wrestler about the two years of his life where he drank a bottle of vodka daily and abused Vicodin.

The UFC star revealed that he struggled with injuries and constantly being on the road lead him to a path of self-destruction.

“The ring is a non-forgiving environment to be in, so you are dealing with a lot of different injuries at one time and not only that I am not a man to be on the highway, I am not a man to be in a hotel room every night, I am not a man to be on an airplane every day and it took all that for me to discover that and to cope with all that my best friends, vodka and Vicodin.”

Brock Lesnar was raised on a dairy farm in South Dakota, therefore, the life of a touring young wrestler would have been very different to what he was used to. He compared wrestling to being a “hamster on a treadmill” and told the host that being a wrestler is not as glamorous as it seems.

The UFC and WWE star is thankful to be able to have his UFC return and balance it with part-time wrestling.

When the host asked about the most romantic thing he has ever done, Lesnar recalled a hilarious prank that went wrong he played on his wife, who is also known as Sable to WWE fans.

“When my son turned 1-year-old I took my wife on a tropical vacation and the people that were watching my son – I told my wife: ‘we’re going away, leave your wedding band at home because I don’t want it to get stolen.’ So while we were gone I had the people that were watching my kids take her wedding band and say that my son swallowed it. In the meantime, they found a picture of a wedding ring inside a kid’s stomach on x-ray from the internet.

“So when we got home, the story was all laid out. It was our 5-year anniversary and I wanted to get my wife a new wedding band. And my poor wife took it upon herself – I shouldn’t even tell this story – to search for the wedding ring in dirty diapers.”

After she searched for the wedding ring for two days, Brock continued, “I issued her a new wedding band for our 5 year wedding anniversary, now that’s romantic.”

Lesnar is set to face Mark Hunt in his UFC return. It is a clash of styles, as Mark Hunt is a decorated kickboxer who is known for knockouts. He recently knocked out Brock Lesnar’s old nemesis Frank Mir in Brisbane, Australia, in March. Mir revealed that he is “betting on” Mark Hunt because Brock Lesnar “doesn’t like to be hit,” according to MMAFighting.com. Mir may be referring to Brock Lesnar’s standup striking abilities and his preference to take fights to the ground.

Brock Lesnar is an accomplished wrestler with vicious ground and pound strikes. Most MMA fans give Brock an advantage on the ground and Mark Hunt an advantage with striking. Hunt has already accused Brock Lesnar of being “juiced to the gills”, according to Bloody Elbow, and the match-up is expected to be an exciting fight for Brock Lesnar’s UFC return.
