Scary: Explosive Stolen From Washington State Port, Feds Investigating
Walla Walla, WA (AHN) – Enough explosives were stolen from the Port of Walla Walla in Washington to do serious damage, according to federal officials who are investigating the theft.
Thieves made off with various items including 96 one-pound blocks of TNT, 17 sticks of dynamite, 180 pounds of black powder, 200 pounds of AMEX/ANFO (a booster sensitive blasting agent), 14 bags of rocket black powder, detonation cord, blasting caps and more.
The five secured bunkers at the explosives magazine in the airport’s industrial section are leased to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and two private citizens. Each of the bunkers was forced open and the items were taken sometime last week, but investigators kept the thefts secret until Friday, according to reports.
Investigators from the Yakima office of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have taken charge of the case. There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the unknown suspect(s).
Some of the explosives belonging to private individuals were fireworks. In addition, Fish and Wildlife reportedly uses explosives to create ponds for wildlife or cisterns for farmers and some of the explosives were slated for disposal by state authorities because they were confiscated or donated by people who no longer had use for them.
