Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova confirmed Friday that she and her finance, former Los Angeles Lakers player Sasha Vujacic, have parted ways.

“It’s been since the end of spring actually,” Sharapova told reporters at the U.S. Open. “I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did directly. I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced that we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well.”

According to the NY Daily, Sharapova, 25, and Vujacic, 28, began dating in 2010 after meeting at a mutual friend’s barbecue. A year later, the comely couple was engaged, with a wedding allegedly scheduled for sometime this fall.

Trouble, however, set in a short time later when Vujacic signed with a professional basketball team in Turkey, literally putting a huge gap between him and his bride-to-be.

“He wasn’t home one time during the 10 months that he was in Turkey, so that made it extremely difficult,” she said. “But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Still would love to call him as a friend. Yeah, we spent really great years together.”

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Friday as she won 12 of the last 13 points of her match to defeat NCAA runner-up Mallory Burdette 6-1, 6-1.

CBS Sports notes that Sharapova, who completed the career Grand Slam at the French Open in June, has not been tested so far this year at Flushing Meadows, losing a total of seven games during her first three matches.
