J.K. Simmons: 61-Year-Old’s Secret ‘Arm Blaster’ Workout Makes Actor’s Biceps And Triceps Pop

As seen in the above photo, J.K. Simmons appeared to be in relatively good shape when Simmons showed up for an event on Friday, September 11, 2015, in Santa Monica, California. However, the below photos of Simmons on Instagram have plenty of people talking online and asking what kind of workout is giving J.K. such ripped and hulking arms for a 61-year-old man.

As reported by Mashable, the photos of J.K. looking totally yoked and ripped went viral on Wednesday. Simmons was known to be in great shape for his Whiplash role, but the new photos of Simmons sporting seriously ripped arms with striations for days got people really talking.

With his upcoming role as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, Simmons is being accused of trying to turn himself into an actual superhero with those arms.

The Instagram account of Aaron Williamson, J.K.’s trainer and a former Marine, is certainly growing in followers after the photos of Simmons have spread online. Aaron also trains folks like Dwayne Johnson — but it’s the photos of Simmons showing off his amazing 61-year-old arms that have people wanting to know more. Namely, why would Commissioner Gordon need to appear so jacked?

Nevertheless, Simmons is known to go after his roles with gusto, and this latest role preparation is no exception.

Thankfully, Aaron clued Mashable in on his secrets for getting Simmons so ripped, which included a combination of J.K.’s previous weight loss and the “arm blaster” workout factor.

The photos of J.K. are not the result of Photoshop. Instead, Simmons taps both Williamson’s expertise and that of another trainer to help whip J.K. into crazy shape. While Aaron helps J.K. with specific parts of his body, the other trainer’s mission is focusing on Simmons’ core strength.

Simmons looks so “swole” in some of the photos because J.K. at times doesn’t rest much between exercises, a factor that pumps more blood into his muscles. More than 1,700 posts on Instagram are tagged with the “arm blaster” hashtag, with some videos showing people using the “arm blaster” in action.

The below video gives a great vantage point of how the triceps can pop while doing curls with an “arm blaster.”

The goal of the “arm blaster” is to isolate the bicep muscles, as is seen in the photos of Simmons performing the curls. Credit the “arm blaster” with pushing out J.K.’s tricep muscles while he’s using the equipment. Other than that, J.K. trains with Aaron two or three days per week, the same amount Simmons trains with the other trainer. That gives J.K. the weekends off from training.

Aaron also notes that he helps Simmons work out his muscles from varying angles and flush as much blood as possible into them by using less weight and shorter rest periods. Aaron credits J.K.’s dedication in the gym as well.

“It really depends on how dedicated someone is. Most people do a set, check their phone, walk around for three or four minutes. When you’re in the gym and you get a good pump going, you look a little bit bigger than usual. He’s a beast in a whole ‘nother category, mainly because of his age. But I would compare him with the Zac Efrons and James Brolins — he’s right up there with the dedication. If I tell him to eat three almonds, he eats three almonds.

“As far as the movie goes, I know he was cast as the commissioner. That’s something he’s trying to prepare for. But that’s it. As far as the movie goes, I’m totally in the dark.”
