Mitt Romney cares about you and your family’s future. But rising oceans? Climate change? Those issues don’t seem too important to the GOP candidate.

During his speech at the Republican National Convention, Romney mocked President Obama’s stance on climate change.

Romney said: “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans…”

He then paused as the crowd laughed at the supposed absurdity of Obama’s promise.

Then continued: ”And to heal the planet. My promise … is to help you and your family.”

The Huffington Post notes that Romney’s comments mock what President Obama said in 2008 when he accepted his nomination from the Democratic party.

Obama said:

“We will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment … when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Several people have come to Romney’s defense saying that the GOP candidate was trying to portray Obama as someone who makes grandiose and unattainable promises. Others, however, argue that climate change was the wrong issue to use.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said:

“How narrow-minded, how small and insular and piggish can you be about this country, to say, ‘We don’t care about the planet we live on,’ which is getting hotter, climate change has manifested all over the world … and he’s mocking it.”

Romney’s comment may have been mocking President Obama and not climate change but the comment does seem to reflect the GOP candidate’s view on the environment.

While speaking at Speaking at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last year Romney said:

“My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet. And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us.”
