‘Archer’ Producers Choose Jon Hamm To Play The Character If A Live-Action Movie Ever Happens

FX’s animated series Archer just wrapped up its seventh season on June 2, and with the popularity of the show, there have been rumors of the creators thinking of doing a live-action movie version of the series.

Now, the producers of Archer are saying that they there is only one person they have in mind to play the character of Sterling Archer, and it is none other than Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm.

In an interview with The Daily Beast before Season 7 started, executive producers Casey Willis and Matt Thompson firmly said that they want Jon Hamm to play Archer if a live-action movie will be made.

“It’s Jon Hamm. If Archer goes live-action, I do believe it will be Jon Hamm.”

In Archer, Sterling Archer is voiced by H. Jon Benjamin. His distinct voice adds character to Archer, and many would agree that a live-action Archer movie wouldn’t be complete without H. Jon Benjamin’s voice, but the producers have already thought of that and said the following, according to Slash Film.

“Maybe you could do it with Jon Benjamin’s voice coming out of him [Jon Hamm]? I don’t know. Adam is always like, ‘I don’t know if I want the movie to be live-action because I want it to be Jon Benjamin!’ But if it is live-action — and if it is not Jon Benjamin — it is our greatest hope that it would be Jon Hamm. I can say that with confidence.”

It would be quite difficult to pull off a live-action movie if the voice actors of Archer would play their characters as most of the characters’ features are not patterned after their voice actors. Vulture showed an image of Archer characters beside their real-life models, and they include a former model, an antique dealer, and an emergency room doctor.

Archer, created by Adam Reed, tells the story of Sterling Archer, a self-absorbed spy who originally worked for ISIS (International Secret Intelligence Service). The show focuses on Archer’s adventures together with his mother and boss, Malory Archer (Jessica Walter), and a bunch of other ISIS employees including his ex-girlfriend Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), comptroller Cyril Figgs (Chris Parnell), intelligence analyst Ray Gillette (Adam Reed), human resources director Pam Poovey (Amber Nash), secretary Cheryl Tunt (Judy Greer), and head of the applied research department, Dr. Algernop Krieger (Lucky Yates).

The producers of Archer say that the style of the show has a Mad Men influence when it comes to the characters’ costumes. Mad Men is the period drama series that ran from 2007 to 2015, and it stars Jon Hamm as Don Draper.

Although the producers have already made up their mind when it comes to which actor they want to play Archer, the movie is still far from reality. It’s not impossible, however, as the Reed and Thompson talk about it once in a while.

“It’s all up to whatever Adam [Reed] wants to do, but he and I have definitely talked about it. I think we talk about it once every two years. We vacillate between if you do it, why are you doing the TV show?

“The talk is there, we jut still haven’t decided. I don’t think there will be a movie before the last episode of Archer airs on TV. I don’t think we’ll make a movie before the series finishes.”

Archer has not yet been renewed for Season 8.
