Dallas Cowboys’ Rumors: Cowboys Closing In On A Cornerback

NFL free agency has been quiet as far as the Dallas Cowboys are concerned. A few months into the NFL offseason and the Cowboys have not made a huge signing yet. What the Cowboys have done is make a handful of small moves in an effort to add depth to the roster. But for a team that finished with a disappointing 4-12 record, more was expected.

That may soon change if the Cowboys like what they see in cornerback Brandon Boykin.

According to SportsDay Dallas News, the Cowboys will have the former Philadelphia Eagles’ corner to come in for a visit with team officials. If everything with Brandon Boykin works out, look for the Cowboys to offer him a contract.

Brandon Boykin is a talented cornerback who had several teams take a look at him. The Cowboys are not alone in bringing him in for a workout. In fact, Boykin signed a deal with the Carolina Panthers, who were looking for insurance in their secondary. It was the Panthers who beat out other teams for his services. The deal was ripped almost as soon as it was agreed upon. The Panthers abruptly cut Boykin less than two months after a deal was struck.

Boykin would then garner interest from the Atlanta Falcons. Nothing materialized, leaving him available for other teams to take a flyer on him.

Why the Panthers cut bait and why the Falcons backed away from their interest in Brandon Boykin was a mystery. That is until recent rumors began to surface regarding the cornerback’s health.

According to Steelers Depot, it is believed that Brandon Boykin has a degenerative hip.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the last team that Boykin played for. He was acquired by the Steelers in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional fifth-round pick. Because the Steelers have issues on the defensive side of the football, not re-signing Boykin raised an eyebrow or two.

Talent-wise, Boykin is a solid nickel corner who could have helped. If there is any truth to the rumor about Boykin having a bad hip, the Steelers should have some inside knowledge about it. That would be the reason why they did not bring him back. It also has to factor in as to why he did not stick with the Panthers long enough to participate in any offseason training activities.

Even if it is on a short-term basis, Brandon Boykin is certain that he can help a football team. Any health concerns will go to the discretion of the team who signs him.

As of now it appears that the Dallas Cowboys are the team with interest. They do have a need for depth at the cornerback position. The status of starting cornerback Orlando Scandrick is up in the air while he is recovering from knee surgery. Now the Cowboys are hoping to like what they see in Brandon Boykin. One thing is for certain, the interest is there. If it were not, it would be difficult to imagine the Cowboys even entertaining the notion of bringing Boykin in for a workout.

The hunch is that the Cowboys will sign Brandon Boykin to a one-year deal, maybe for two years, with a lot of incentives built in the language of the contract. Unlike the teams who passed on Boykin, the Cowboys are not afraid to take a chance on a player who can help. That goes for a player recovering from an injury, and for a player who is looking to prove that he is healthy and ready to contribute. The latter describes Brandon Boykin to perfection.

The Dallas Cowboys have been quiet for the most part in NFL free agency, but that may change. The Cowboys’ reported interest in cornerback Brandon Boykin could be something they are looking at as a sneaky move with a potentially big payoff.
