Tampa, FL – In a calculated move to endear the GOP to minorities and combat accusations of racism, Mitt Romney’s son delivered a speech on behalf of his father at the Republican National Convention – part of which was in Spanish.

A lot of Thursday’s RNC events thus far are devoted to two things: one, courting the minority vote (particularly the Latino vote) and showing how Mitt Romney saved the Olympics (but more on that later). Enter Craig Romney, son of the GOP presidential hopeful, to help with the former. He delivered a pitch for Mitt to the Latino community, completely in fluent and unbroken Spanish.

He also touched on his grandfather’s immigration to the US, becoming quite emotional in the process:

“It’s easy to forget that the story of my father’s success begins with the story of two immigrants–,” said Craig, becoming visibly shaken. “– my grandfathers — who came to this country with little more than hope in the opportunity of America.”

Romney trails behind President Obama with the Latino vote by huge margins, so part of this week has focused on issues that concern them. The argument by Republicans is that Latinos are being taken advantage of by President Obama, and that his administration moves based on bias rather than on the issues.

What will Romney say when he takes the dais?

We don’t know just yet, but he’s expected to position himself as a capable executive and reach out to disaffected voters who had hope for an Obama America in 2008 only to be disappointed in his ultimate governorship.

“If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn’t you feel that way now that he’s President Obama?” Romney will say, according to the Washington Post. “You know there’s something wrong with the kind of job he’s done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him.”
