Jessica Phillips wins US time trial cycling championship

Jessica Phillips has returned from a four-year sabbatical from professional cycling and become the US national time trial champion for the Lip Smackers team.

Phillips won by just one second over young rider Evelyn Stevens of Team CRCA, her time of 50 minutes and 35 seconds at the 35 kilometre course in Bend, Oregon, placing defending champion Alison Powers of Team Type 1 into third with a time of 50:58.

Phillips’ career looked over when she walked away in the middle of a European cycling season in 2004, having made her name by winning the Elite women’s road race in 2002. However, this win, which came on the back of a win in the stage four time trial of the Cascade Cycling Classic less than a week ago, caps her return to the sport at the top level.

Being in Oregon during summer, of course, the race was conducted in strong winds and temperatures that pushed into the 90s.
