The convertible tablet/PC market received some powerhouse competition on Wednesday when Hewlett Packard (HP) rolled out the HP Envy x2. The Envy X2 is a 3.1-pound aluminum laptop computer with a multi-touch capable screen that doubles as a tablet.

When separated from its keyboard body, the tablet is just 1.5 pounds and can be used with an optional stylus pen that utilizes the device’s 11.6-inch display with 1366×768 pixels of resolution on a 300-nit IPS HD multitouch panel.

HP has also included an HD webcam on the frontside of the tablet’s display while an 8MP camera covers the backside.

HP is powering the Envy x2 with the help of an Intel Atom Clover Trail-based processor with an unknown clock speed. The Envy X2 also features a very nice 64GB SSD and a full-size SD card reader for expanded storage.

Adding to the device’s connectivity are two USB ports and a full-size HDMI port.

Throwing in some modern day appeal the tablet/PC also features Beats Audio speakers and Near-Field Communications (NFC), which can be used for mobile payments via the device’s hardware.

All of those features are powered by Microsoft’s new Windows 8 OS, which means the Envy X2 won’t be released until at least October 26 when Microsoft debuts its new operating system.

HP plans to start selling the HP Envy X2 in the US before the holiday shopping season. At this time, the exact release date and pricing for the cross-platform device have not been revealed by Hewlett Package.
