Ronda Rousey’s Next Fight Delayed Due To Minor Surgery, Says UFC President Dana White

Ronda Rousey’s next fight might not be until 2017, according to the latest reports from the UFC. The former MMA champion hasn’t been in the octagon since getting knocked out by Holly Holm with a kick to the head.

Rousey has stated that the fight ending the way it did brought her a level of depression, knowing that after the kick, she just couldn’t keep the fight going. As a fighter infamous for her record wins using the arm bar to pin opponents within a minute, her fall from the top was emotionally devastating. She even told Ellen DeGeneres that she’d felt suicidal when it happened.

The defeat was especially horrible considering her ongoing feud with boxing heavyweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and what looked to be a promising career in acting on the horizon. Ronda Rousey was fresh off her cameo as a bouncer in Furious 7 and as herself in Entourage. Her next project is the remake of Road House, replacing Patrick Swayze in Hollywood’s attempt to put more women on the big screen.

The move toward getting more women on the screen hasn’t been widely accepted by the general public, especially with Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot receiving so much backlash and igniting an internet war between “misogynist” armchair critics and feminists. Rousey was also hoping to be the title character of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel a few years from now, but that role is currently owned by Brie Larson.

For now, Ronda Rousey is training to get back in shape even though a minor knee surgery has set her back, says UFC President Dana White.

“Ronda Rousey, I don’t know. I’m hoping we’re going to get Ronda back this year. She actually just had surgery yesterday on her knee. Nothing serious, just get in there, scope it, and clean it out a little bit. She feels great. Her spirits are great. She’s been training.”

Of course, until Rousey’s knee is back to fighting condition, it’s probably best if she doesn’t take on too much action for a while. This is probably the biggest reason why Road House hasn’t begun filming, since the role is meant to capitalize on Rousey’s ability to fight.

Dana White claims that Rousey’s return to the UFC roster will put her directly against the current champion, whoever she is.

“If she fights, I’m hoping she fights in December. If not, then she would probably fight at the New Year show at the beginning of the year. If Miesha Tate’s still the champion, she’ll fight Miesha Tate. Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight. Injuries happen in this sport and a fight is made. Somebody falls out and somebody else slides in. I’m not even saying Holly Holm couldn’t be the champion by the time Ronda comes back. So, whoever holds that belt when Ronda’s ready.”

Fans and UFC President Dana White are all hoping for a swift recovery, and now that Rousey has tasted defeat, another loss might not get her down as much as it did before.

Do you think Ronda Rousey will be ready to take back the belt before 2017?
