Genene Jones: Killer Nurse

Between the 1970s and 1980s, Genene Jones, also known as “The Killer Nurse” and “Angel of Death,” killed more than 40 babies during her career as a pediatric nurse in Texas.

Sadly, it took the death of Chelsea Ann McClellan to jump start the investigation. In 1982, 15-month-old Chelsea McClellan went to Dr. Kathleen Holland’s clinic in Kerrville, Texas, where she suddenly experienced breathing issues. Chelsea McClellan’s mother was standing right next to her child when the nurse gave her an injection. About the experience, Petti McClellan stated the following, according to ABC-News.

“I was holding Chelsea, she was facing me, and Jones gave her the first shot in her left thigh. Immediately Chelsea had trouble breathing. Chelsea was trying to say my name, but she couldn’t. I was extremely upset.

After Chelsea was rushed to the local hospital, doctors were able to revive her. Then, one month later, just like the first time, Chelsea experienced a seizure and stopped breathing during a routine visit at Dr. Holland’s office. This time, she died.

Another Doctor Was Under Suspicion

Dr. Kathleen Holland’s clinic in Kerrville was already under scrutiny after six babies had stopped breathing while in the examination room, causing everyone to wonder if there was something sinister going on.

With the death of baby Chelsea, an official medical investigation was launched, which placed Dr. Holland under suspicion. The autopsy report indicated that Chelsea had succinylcholine in her system at the time of her death. But doctors wondered how the baby could have come in contact with succinylcholine.

The Killer’s Identity Comes Into Focus

That question was answered after Dr. Holland’s nurse, 32-year-old Genene Jones, told Dr. Holland that she had found the bottle of succinylcholine that had gone missing. Holland immediately grew suspicious of the nurse and decided to check the bottles, which were full but had a hole in the center of the cap. The bottles were turned over to police, who sent them for testing. The results led to the arrest and conviction of Genene Jones.

Genene Jones Is Getting Out Of Prison.

At trial, she was sentenced to over 99 years in prison. But soon, she will be released under the Mandatory Release Law and could be out as early as 2017 or 2018 due to an issue with prison overcrowding, according to a report by CNN.

The Mandatory Release Law Allows:

  1. Inmates convicted of violent crimes to be released
  2. The crime had to be committed between 1977 and 1987
  3. The inmate must have “good behavior” credit
  4. Inmate time served must equal their prison sentence.

Family members of Genene Jones’ victims say they can’t believe that she will be released after the grief she heaped upon so many families. Marina Rodriguez, whose 5-month-old baby died after receiving an injection from Genene Jones, expressed her feelings about the killer’s upcoming release, as reported by CNN.

“All of a sudden he turned blue, and all of a sudden, I started hearing code blue. And then of course they put me to the side because I’m a young mommy and I’m freaking out. She’s not getting out! She’s not going to get out! If my son has to be exhumed to prove that she murdered him, then that’s the step we’ll take. They’re not dealing with a little girl anymore, this is a woman now.”
