Kansas Teen Stabbed Little Sister To Death And Gets 16-Year Sentence
A Kansas teen has been sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment after she was convicted in the violent slaying of her own sister. CBS News reports that 16-year-old Sierra Niehaus was convicted of second-degree murder, stemming from the 2014 incident. Is the sentence fitting of the crime committed by the teenage girl?
Back in 2014, the Saline County, Kansas, teen was arrested after her 13-year-old little sister was found stabbed to death in their rural home. The Wichita Eagle reported that the mother of the two teenage girls notified authorities that Sierra, 16 years old, stabbed her 13-year-old sister. When EMTs responded to the home at the time of the incident, the younger sibling was found unresponsive with apparent signs of trauma associated with being stabbed.

Galazia Niehaus had been stabbed numerous times in her back by her own sister. She never had a fighting chance, due to the fact that she died at the scene of the stabbing. At the time of the violent incident, Sierra Niehaus went on the run after stabbing her little sister. However, she was apprehended by a police officer not long after she tried to run.

This isn’t the only time a teenager has been arrested for violently killing someone in his or her immediate family. In fact, of all violent crime arrests in the United States, teens account for approximately 13.7 percent. Cases of fratricide — the killing of one’s brother or sister — reportedly accounts for approximately 18 percent of family-related homicides. Sierra Niehaus’ actions fall into the 14 percent statistic of sisters killing sisters. In most cases of fratricide, police see males targeting their male siblings. Approximately 72 percent of fratricide cases involve brothers killing brothers.

In January 2014, a 14-year-old Illinois girl was arrested after she allegedly stabbed her 11-year-old sister at least 40 times. The elder teen called police after the stabbing, fabricating a story that an intruder had come into the house, assaulted her sister, and then fled. Once investigators were able to get to the bottom of this case, they determined that the younger sister was violently stabbed to death because the 14-year-old suspect felt that she “was ungrateful.” As of 2015, the unidentified teenager has been convicted for her actions on that fatal day. She was also sentenced to six years of imprisonment, meaning she will be out, freely, when she is just 21 years old.

Earlier this year two Oklahoma brothers were arrested on accusations that they plotted and executed the mass killing of their parents and three siblings. The two brothers, 19-year-old Robert Bever and 17-year-old Michael Bever, also had plans to gain notoriety as serial killers. Among the five family members they killed, one of them was their own 5-year-old little sister. They also attempted — and failed — to kill their 13-year-old sister.
Do you think 16 years of imprisonment is long enough for Kansas teen Sierra Niehaus? Very few reports have indicated whether or not the 16-year-old girl has shown any contrition toward her violent actions.
