According to Religion News Service, the Christian rock star says being gay wasn’t what he wanted for himself.

“I never wanted to be gay. I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it was never an option for me.”

Instead, the boy from a conservative Christian home grew into a man who tried very hard to be straight, even marrying a woman eight years ago to fit the part. He had always been taught that being gay was a choice, but Pearson ultimately realized he “was never going to be who my wife needed me to be.”

“I had always romanticized the idea of falling in love with a woman; and having a family had always been my dream. In many ways, that dream has come true. But I have also come to realize a lot of time has passed in my life pushing away, blocking out and not dealing with real feelings going on inside of me,” the Christian rock star said in a letter to his fans.

The Washington Post reports that Pearson may be taking a risk by coming out to his Christian music fans. His band, Everyday Sunday, may feel the brunt of his public confession when Christian radio stations and churches refuse to play songs from the band. It has happened to others who have come out as gay before Pearson, namely Ray Boltz, Anthony Williams, Jennifer Knapp, and Vicky Beeching.

Although Pearson has come out as gay, he still feels like he is a Christian just the same as before. Now, the Christian rock star is telling the truth instead of living a lie.

The lead singer claims that he believes God accepts him as he is, that God wants him to accept himself, and he can still follow Jesus just as before. He maintains that he still prays and reads his Bible diligently.

Pearson wrote, “I hope people will hear my heart, and that I will still be loved. I’m still the same guy, with the same heart, who wants to love God and love people with everything I have.”

He admits the last several months have been trying while he has come to grips with his sexuality and what it means to be a gay Christian, but he also believes that coming out has made him extremely free.

Pearson also wrote that he is sorry for hurting his wife, Lauren. He says that she has been extremely supportive of him during this time and that they will be co-parenting their children and remaining friends.

Pearson plans to continue to write music and will be performing at Wild Goose, the Christian festival, in July.

Understanding that there are more people out there like him, the Christian rock star wants to become a voice within the “gay Christian” campaign to advocate for acceptance in Christian churches.
