Ann Coulter Insists ‘Mandarins’ Is The Proper Term For Asians, Refuses To Apologize

During her appearance on Friday night’s edition of Hardball With Chris Matthews, political commentator and avid Donald Trump supporter Ann Coulter made another one of the unbelievably politically incorrect statements she is famous for when she insisted that Asian Americans be referred to as “Mandarins” and refused to apologize for the offensive slur once she was called out on its use.

During the show, Chris Matthews had MSNBC anchor Joy Reid on for a segment to discuss recent behavior at Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign rallies and the beliefs of his constituents. Ann Coulter came on the show during the same segment, and one of the things Coulter touched upon was the ethnicities of the Trump rally attendees, noting that there had been Latinos and Chinese Americans in the crowd.

Ann did not use the term “Chinese Americans,” though. Instead, she opted to go with a much more offensive term.

“They have Mandarins in the audience.”

Reid, a more liberal commentator than the so-red-she’s-smoking Coulter, quickly pounced on Ann’s ignorant slur, shouting to be heard over Coulter’s voice.

“Stop calling people ‘Mandarins.’ It’s called ‘Asian Americans,’ Ann.”

After several seconds of fighting to drown each other out with their voices, Coulter quieted down and let Reid say what she wanted to say while Ann stared straight ahead with blank eyes.

“That’s throwback language, it’s not 1913. They’re called Asian Americans, not Mandarins.”

Without acknowledging Reid’s point, Coulter then sprang back into life.

“Anyway, as I was saying,” Coulter continued, “we have an invasion of people across the Southern border…”

Reid then interrupted Coulter again, no doubt feeling dissatisfied with Ann’s refusal to recognize Reid’s first objection.

“If your default for referring to Asian Americans is to call people Mandarins, we’re not bringing back arcane language here, Ann, let’s just talk about people as Americans, Asian Americans.”

This time, Coulter snapped back at Reid.

“No, you’re not going to police my language. They are Mandarins!” she shot back indignantly.

Seeing that Reid and Coulter had gotten into a shouting match, the show’s producers quickly cut their feeds and turned the camera back to Chris Matthews.

“I think somebody just said, and I agree with, which is if you consider yourself American, you are,” Matthews said before quickly wrapping up the segment.

Complex notes that even Matthews, who is, as he said himself, not very liberal at all, looked shocked by Coulter’s language during the interview, although his obligation to remain neutral during the segment kept him from reprimanding her.

Reid and Matthews were far from the only ones offended by Ann Coulter’s “Mandarin” remarks. The social media outcry against them has been huge.

Asian American blogger “Angry Asian Man” elaborated on why Coulter’s use of the phrase was both ignorant and destructive in a Monday post, pointing out that the term “Mandarins” has not been used to refer to Chinese people since the country was freed from imperial rule in 1912.

“The racial overtones of Coulter’s use of ‘Mandarins’ are crystallized as she continues to pontificate upon the group she is targeting. In naming Asian-Americans ‘Mandarins,’ Coulter also declares us broadly un-American, and warns of an ‘invasion.'”

The anger at Ann Coulter and her bigoted behavior is pretty much universal for understandable reasons, but what is a little more surprising is that people are very angry at Chris Matthews and MSNBC for giving Coulter a platform on which to broadcast racially insensitive speech to the masses in the first place.

This is not the first time Ann Coulter has outraged the masses with outrageously offensive speech. She is known for blaming America’s political problems on “the f*****g Jews” and encouraging violence at Trump rallies, among many other instances that dug her deeper into the doghouse of the internet.

And judging by Coulter’s past record of offensive speech, it is highly unlikely she will be making a formal apology anytime soon.
