The words “airport” and “crash” aren’t two that people like to hear used in the same sentence, however, the delays that occurred at JFK Airport on Sunday, May 29 are being blamed for a Verizon server crash. On Twitter, the news about the delay at JFK Airport caused nearly 3,000 tweets to flow into the social networking site and caused JFK Airport to become a top trending item as folks turned to social media to share their experiences.

As reported by NBC New York, it was a Verizon server that crashed — one that usually provided internet access — and forced airport employees to manually check in passengers waiting for flights to depart JFK Airport.

The issue affected JFK Airport’s Terminal 7, reports ABC 7. That means international travelers were the ones who experienced delays when the Verizon server crash occurred on Sunday afternoon. Reports and photos of long lines to check-in for flights clutter social media, with reports that certain travelers were handed boarding passes that had been written by hand. It was a reminder of life prior to everything being so dependent upon computers.

Although the problem was fixed at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30, those traveling on Monday are still being advised to allow for extra time during their travels to ensure no delays from the previous day’s happenings would affect their travels. British Airways issued such advice. Those passengers affected by the delay turned to social media to vent and post information and photos.

Some travelers had to wait nearly two hours to check in for their international flights.

As seen in the below photo, Sarah Pels displayed her handwritten boarding pass. Using the hashtags #Terminal7 and #JFK, Pels also let it be known that it was a honeymoon trip. Indeed, Sarah seemed to take it in stride that the “massive tech crash” meant returning to manually creating boarding passes.

With Terminal 7 at JFK Airport being operated by British Airways, some customers are tweeting the airline and asking for recompense for their flight delay issues. At the peak of the delays on Sunday evening, more than 1,000 travelers crowded the lines to check in for their flights. British Airways also leases space in Terminal 7 at JFK Airport to other airlines.

Around midnight, however, those 1,000 or more passengers waiting in long lines had reduced to only 80 or so travelers still waiting to be checked in for their flights. While reports of such a crowded venue have emerged, calling it a dangerous and scary situation, others reports of the crowds being orderly have also emerged.

On the British Airways Twitter page, the carrier is updating the public with alerts like the one above, which notes that Monday, May 30, is a busy holiday travel day, and as such, the airline urges folks to check in online for their flights.

Meanwhile, British Airways is responding to all sorts of compliments and complaints on their Twitter page and has been receiving comments on their Facebook page like the one listed below.

“How to know BA sucks? they close the wall to comments and close the rating option. That’s how you know to stay away. Probably will delete this comment too [tongue emoticon]. Thank God for print screens.”

Others are using the opportunity to turn the Verizon server crash at Terminal 7 at JFK Airport into a political joke, claiming Hillary Clinton’s server problems were somehow involved.

Ironically, Monday is also the day that former President John F. Kennedy, the man whose name graces JFK Airport, would have turned 99 years of age had he lived, reports the International Business Times.
