Murderer Who Confessed To Psychic Tarot Reader Gets Life Sentence

The devil may be in the details, but it can also be in the cards — the tarot cards that is. And the appearance of the Devil card in a tarot reading recently in England prompted a very unusual reaction from the client when he confessed to murder.

According to KGW, Star Randel-Hanson has been convicted of murder and sentenced to life with a minimum of 15 years in the death of his roommate, Derick Marney. Randel-Hanson left him lying on the kitchen floor for 10 days before seeking guidance from psychic Jayne Braiden, who notified police after the confession.

Braiden told the story of how she drew 10 cards for the tarot reading, but knew something was terribly wrong when she saw the cards drawn, including the Devil, Justice, and Death. The Devil was the third card, which was the one that prompted Randel-Hanson to break down.

“The first was the blasted Tower — falling out with someone, really serious row. Then there was the Emperor, dominant male. Then the Devil card means obviously something awful. He broke down and I said to him, ‘Look I can see here that this is not good, you need to tell me everything. Let’s talk.'”

That was when the killer confessed, telling Braiden it was an accident. The tarot reader then informed him she needed to step away to inform the police. If calmly telling a murderer you are going to rat him out to police sounds odd, it took police an hour to arrive, because they first thought the call to report the confession was a hoax.

“I think I thought they would be here in maximum 15 minutes. Then I came back and asked him if he wanted a drink. So I went next door and said, ‘Don’t ask, but can I please have a bottle of water?’ I did not raise the alarm to anyone else (on the seafront) because they would have panicked, so I did not say anything to anyone. It would have made the situation worse. I gave him the water and then we sat chatting.”

After police finally arrived and arrested Randel-Hanson, they went to his apartment and discovered the body of Marney.

Braiden has been offering psychic tarot readings for over 25 years, so she’s obviously seen a lot of stress and strife reflected in readings for her clients. But this was the first time she saw a murderer in the flesh. At least the first time to the best of her knowledge, but she knew it was critical to stay calm.

“I saw the sentence at the end so I knew it was something he would be put away for. I wanted to keep it calm. There were loads of children — it was a family day on the seaside. Me going out there screaming would not have helped anybody.”

After contacting police and returning to her shop to await their arrival, Braiden continued to take notes about the crime that would prove useful to the investigation and presentation of the case in court. She focused on details such as personal info about the deceased, how he was murdered, the location of his wounds, and where the murder weapon had been hidden.

Randel-Hanson claims he was sexually assaulted three times by Marney, who was 70, after Randel-Hanson invited him to move into his apartment to keep him company. The murder occurred after Randel-Hanson claims Marney confronted him while making sandwiches.

Braiden only learned of the more gruesome details of the crime while sitting in the courtroom, where she was a key witness. Even though she formed a rapport with the murderer, she says she has no sympathy for him.

“I formed a rapport because I had to. I knew what I was doing. I knew that I had to keep him there. I knew that it was my duty as well. And I am big on duty. I can let petty things go — but that is duty.”
