Steven Moffat Reveals New Information About ‘Doctor Who’ Companion, Bill, And Season 10

Doctor Who fans recently learned that the Doctor would be receiving a new companion named Bill, played by actress Pearl Mackie. However, little information was provided about Bill at the time of her big reveal, leaving many fans wondering exactly what is in store for Season 10. With so many questions swirling, writer Steven Moffat decided to provide a few new details about Bill, and the upcoming season of Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat gave an interview to Science Fiction in which he answered a few major questions about the new companion Bill, and what fans can expect from her this coming season. Following the big reveal of Pearl Mackie as Bill, many fans quickly noticed she was wearing a Prince T-shirt and speculated that Bill was likely going to hail from the 1980s. You can watch the introductory trailer below if you missed it.

Though Bill is wearing a Prince T-shirt, Steven Moffat says that the character was not pulled from the 1980s. Instead, he reveals that Bill is from our time and that she simply wearing “what young people are wearing now.” Moffat goes so far as to say that he knows Bill’s attire throughout the series will reflect modern-day as he allowed the actress to select her own outfits for the series.

“She’s from now, yeah. I know there are rumors about her being from the 1980s, but she isn’t. She’s just wearing what young people are wearing now. I know that, because Pearl chose her outfit herself.”

Another interesting fact that Moffat revealed during the interview is that Bill will not make an appearance in the Christmas Special. Instead, she will debut in the first episode of Season 10 and remain a companion throughout the entire season. Moffat says that she will be introduced in a very “unusual” way for the series and that she is going to ask questions about the Doctor that no other companions have asked in the past 53 years since the show began.

“Bill is someone who asks the questions that nobody has asked for 53 years. Irreverence and cheek to ask all the questions you’re not supposed to ask on Doctor Who. ‘How different is it having two hearts? Is one a back-up? Do you have very, very high blood pressure?'”

With Moffat revealing that Bill will not take part in the Christmas Special, many are speculating as to who the mysterious companion will be for this year’s show. The Doctor Who Watch notes that many fans are rooting for an appearance from Jack, but note that there is no indication that he will make a return. Moffat gives no clues as to who will be featured in the Christmas special, only noting that there will be a companion in the special.

As far as production is concerned, Steven Moffat says that filming for Season 10 of Doctor Who will begin in July, and that he will personally write the opening episode along with at least three more. It is speculated that he will write the first episode and finish up with the final three that will close out the season. This speculation stems from the fact that Moffat has revealed this is his last season on the show so he will likely want to tie up any loose ends still hanging over his time with the show.

In addition to the four episodes Moffat will be writing, he says he has received some “very strong scripts” from other writers and that each show will stand alone on its own instead of focusing on the two-part episodes that frequented Season 9.
