According to ESPN, Teixeira initially suffered the injury while running out of the batter’s box on a foul ball in the fourth inning. He stayed in the game, worked a walk and eventually scored on Russell Martin’s single to right. He said the strain tightened up on him while he was on the basepaths.

“I took the first step out of the box and felt something kind of grab,” Teixeira said. “I thought I could run through it, finish the at-bat. I drew the walk. Instead of loosening up as I was running, it tightened up more. I knew something wasn’t right. It was severe enough that I knew I needed to get out of the game.”

An MRI exam after the game revealed the bad news: the Yankees slugger had a Grade 1 strain.

“It could be as little as a week, it could be two weeks,” Teixeira told reporters. “I don’t really know. It’s very frustrating.”

Manager Joe Girardi wasn’t very optimistic.

“I don’t see him playing in this series,” Girardi said. “I don’t. I don’t even know if see him playing in the next series.”

Teixeira’s calf injury comes after the 32-year-old missed two games earlier this month due to a sore wrist. He is expected to be replaced at first base by Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez or Steve Pearce.

On the season, Mark Teixeira is hitting .255 with 23 home runs and 81 RBIs.
