Memorial Day Post Office Hours: Is There Mail Delivery May 30? What About UPS And FedEx?

Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. For many people across the country, it’s part of a three-day weekend filled with cookouts, trips to the beach, and shopping the sales at the mall.

For those who will be using their day off to tackle a to-do list full of errands, there may be some confusion as to what’s open and what’s closed on Memorial Day. As with other Federal holidays, many people head to the Internet to find out if the U.S. Post Office is delivering mail, if banks are open, and what the holiday hours are for stores and restaurants on Monday, May 30.

So, what is open on Monday? Here’s the scoop so you can plan out your errands and, perhaps, enjoy some of the long holiday weekend.

Not everything will be closed on Monday, but all post office locations will be closed so that means you won’t get any mail delivered at home or at your office.

If you need to ship a package on Monday, that’s not going to happen, but there are a few exceptions. In addition to the U.S. Postal Service, popular delivery companies including UPS and FedEx will be closed for business except for FedEx Custom Critical deliveries and UPS Holiday and Express Critical service.

Mail and package delivery will resume on Tuesday, May 31 for the USPS, UPS, and FedEx, but you can get your packages ready for mailing by using online label postage printing services like Click-and-Ship from the U.S. Postal Service.

In addition to the post office, most federal offices, including the IRS, Social Security Administration, and all Federal Reserve Banks will be closed on Memorial Day. Most schools and public libraries will also be closed, and you can expect to find banks and credit unions closed for the holiday. Make use of an in-network ATM for cash and online banking or your bank’s mobile app to make transfers between accounts or check your balance.

What about retail stores and restaurants, are they open for business on Monday?

Memorial Day is typically a big day for finding a deal on clothing and home goods, so if hitting up the sales at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, TJ Maxx, Home Depot, or your favorite mall store is how you want to spend your day off, you’re in luck.

All Walmart stores will be open on May 31, and if you have a Walmart Supercenter nearby, you can shop ’til you drop for your Memorial Day cookout supplies 24 hours a day.

Popular stores like Target, Best Buy, KMart, Sears, Victoria’s Secret, Old Navy, and American Eagle will also be operating on a regular Monday schedule, but it’s always a good idea to call ahead to your favorite store to find out if they have special holiday hours.

Costco is one of the few retailers who close their doors not only Memorial Day but six other major holidays — Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. If you need food, most major grocery stores like Stop & Shop, Food Lion, and Kroger, will be open, but may close early in some locations.

There won’t be a shortage of restaurants to try on Memorial Day if you don’t feel like hosting a barbecue in your backyard, but just like retail stores, it’s important to call ahead for holiday hours. If dining out is on your to-do list on Monday, major chain restaurants including TGI Fridays, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Denny’s, Cracker Barrel, Hometown Buffet, and most fast food restaurants will be jam-packed with patrons who don’t want to cook on the holiday.
