Edward Furlong was mugged last week in a rough part of Los Angeles, but the crime does not appear to have been particularly violent.

Furlong was mugged in the “Skid Row” section of LA, an area that is notorious for its large population of homeless people — the largest stable population in the US — as well as its general roughness. The area in which Furlong was mugged is officially called “Central City East,” but the Skid Row moniker has stuck in a somewhat official capacity across the years.

Furlong was mugged in an area in which significant outreach services exist for the homeless population as well. Volunteers of America, Union Rescue Mission, The Jonah Project, Downtown Mental Health, The Weingart Foundation, Los Angeles Mission Community Clinic, Fred Jordan Mission, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center, and Midnight Mission as well as several other organizations are stationed permanently in the area to assist Skid Row’s transient population.

TMZ first reported on Furlong getting mugged, but the celebrity gossip site blames Furlong for even going into the high-crime area at all. (And, of course, the site’s long-lensed photogs were there.) TMZ says Furlong “claimed” he was mugged, but it goes on to basically say the 35-year-old star should have been more careful:

“But truth is … he was asking for trouble… Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, Furlong flagged an officer making the rounds in Skid Row — one of the most drug-infested area in L.A. — and claimed he had asked a man for directions … and the man aggressively demanded his wallet.”

After Furlong was mugged, he flagged down an officer and reported the crime. The Los Angeles Police Department is said to be investigating.
