Adele’s 2016 BBMAs Video Premiere Dress: How To Get Your Hands On It

Adele premiered the music video for her next single “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” on Sunday night (May 22) at the Billboard Music Awards.

The video isn’t a typical Adele video since it’s colorful in style. It features the singer twirling around in a beautiful floral print dress as rays of color play out against the dark background. Adele’s long-sleeve floral grown is designed by Dolce & Gabbana. The music video was shot in London and directed by Patrick Daughters, who has worked with Muse and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Adele teamed up with her longtime stylist Gaelle Paul to choose just one iconic look for the video. She decided on the beautiful gown from Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. Of course, there were other options, Paul told Billboard. Adele had to listen to the director’s lead when it came to choosing the right dress.

“It was really about what he needed from the dress. It was quite dark, the background, and we needed something that would show up against that.”

The director stated that the dress needed “to flow” in the video. So Adele and Paul went through two racks of dresses, most of which were sequin. The sequin dresses weren’t enough for Adele to stand out in the video, so they chose the floral number because it “just felt right.” Plus, it was the very first time that Adele had worn something from Dolce & Gabbana.

“It’s so on trend: the flow-y elevated hippie kind of thing that has been going for three to four seasons now. It’s a great trend — I love the ’60s and ’70s references — and Adele wears it beautifully.”

And there’s something else that you should know about this dress: “It’s also nice that you can actually purchase this dress — it’s available now.”

The dress comes with a pretty hefty price tag of $7,500, which probably won’t fit many people’s budgets. While the dress was available for purchase on the Net-A-Porter site, it’s currently sold out at the moment. You can add the dress to wishlist to find out when the dress will come back in stock.

Adele nearly swept the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make it to the event to celebrate her big win since she’s currently on her world tour. But premiering her new video made up for her absence from topping the charts late last year. Adele spoke to the Guardian about the song’s message.

“This is my f*ck-you song. It sounds obvious, but I think you only learn to love again when you fall in love again. I’m in that place. My love is deep and true with my man, and that puts me in a position where I can finally reach out a hand to the ex. Let him know I’m over it.”

Director Patrick Daughters told Entertainment Weekly that the colorful, carefree, and laidback video had very little edits. It wasn’t even choreographed. The main focus was just having Adele twirl around and look beautiful as ever.

“There really isn’t any editing in the video. But in a way, as you watch the video many times, you start to make your own edits because you focus on different layers of her performance. That’s something we built into the idea, that there’s a lot of different versions of this video to see but they’re all there at the same time.”

The reason why there are different layers of Adele as she twirls around is that she’s “letting go of the ghosts” of her past, according to Daughters. It’s a message that symbolic and pure.
