Tropical Storm Isaac will make land fall Sunday in the Florida Keys and meteorologists predict the storm will be at or near hurricane strength when it arrives.

Workers at the U.S. National Hurricane Center have called for possible isolated tornadoes in parts of the Keys and southern Florida as sustained winds have already leaprf to more than 60 mph with wind gusts exceeding those levels.

At this time the hurricane watch extends into the Mississippi River and eastward to Indian Pass, Florida, although it currently does not include the metropolitan area of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tropic Storm Isaac has already demonstrated its strength by hitting Cuba on Saturday and then leaving at least four people dead in Haiti.

The storm has become strong enough to postpone the Republican National Convention which was set to begin on Monday. Instead event organizers are hoping the bulk of the storm will pass by Monday night so they can prepare for Tuesday afternoon events.

The GOP had hoped to host convention visitors at least in part at “Romneyville” an outdoor location that has been temporarily shut down in lieu of tropical storm Isaac’s likely transformation from a run of the mill tropical storm to a hurricane.

In the meantime residents in the Florida Keys were witnessed on Sunday morning as they continued to board up windows, place sandbags around their homes and business and then head out of town to avoid the onslaught of bad weather.

As always the U.S. national Hurricane Center and local meteorologists warn residents to keep an eye on the storm and follow all recommended plans of action as they are provided.
