WWE News: Another Potential Return Backstage For ‘Extreme Rules’

Extreme Rules has always been marketed as the one night of the year where WWE goes to the extreme. But this year they might want to re-brand it a bit due to all the outside-the-ring news that’s surrounding Sunday’s pay-per-view. Well before the bell to WWE’s second post-WrestleMania event has even rung, we’ve seen reports about the release of Cody Rhodes, as well as the refuting of all those rumors. But lurking in the background are the potential returns of two of WWE’s injured stars.

The Inquisitr noted earlier that Seth Rollins is backstage for Extreme Rules with a possible eye on spoiling the WWE World Heavyweight Championship main event between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles. Rollins is also scheduled to appear at this coming’s week’s episodes of Monday Night RAW and Smackdown. That doesn’t officially mean that Rollins will be involved in the show, as his original return date was slated for Monday, June 6. But he appears fully-recovered and he is with the WWE in case officials decide to use him.

We know that John Cena will be returning to the WWE on the Memorial Day episode of RAW on May 30. Randy Orton is still a couple months away from a full recovery. Bray Wyatt’s return is imminent, but not expected until at least after Cena’s reemergence. Neville is also close to a return, reportedly with a prominent role awaiting him when he gets back. So that leaves just one bona fide stud and certified G who’s set to make his presence felt if called upon at Extreme Rules: Enzo Amore.

According to a report from PWInsider, WWE has brought Enzo to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and an Enzo sighting is definitely a possibility. Amore is also scheduled to travel to RAW and Smackdown like Rollins, but like Rollins, it isn’t a guarantee yet that he’ll be performing on camera. It isn’t clear whether Enzo has been cleared to wrestle just yet, but the fact that they might be willing to have him appear or even do a promo is an encouraging sign.

To coincide with Enzo’s availability, it is being reported that The Dudley Boyz will also be backstage for Extreme Rules. We have noted in the past that the plan coming out of Payback was for the Dudleyz to feud with Enzo & Cass, so WWE may continue down that path, despite the brief bump in the road with Enzo’s concussion. Bubba Ray and D-Von were scheduled to run-in during Enzo & Big Cass’ pay-per-view match with The Vaudevillains, allowing the latter to win the number one contenders tournament. Things still worked out for WWE in the sense that Aiden English and Simon Gotch were always slated to win the tournament and face The New Day for the tag titles at Extreme Rules. There was just supposed to be another supplementary tag feud enhancing the division even more. There are still two tag matches at Sunday’s pay-per-view and the Enzo/Cass-Dudley rivalry will simply resume when Enzo is cleared.

We have noted a few times recently how WWE and Vince McMahon are big supporters of Enzo’s partner, Big Cass. Cassady is in line for a big singles push, but it just depends on what they decide to do with Enzo. There have been discussions involving the long-term idea of turning Enzo into a manager. His unique mic skills would lend perfectly to the role, but there are some within WWE that feel he’d be just as valuable as a wrestler. Other recent discussions have centered around bringing Carmella up to the main roster to reunite with her partners from NXT.

Either way, if Enzo shows up at Extreme Rules, the reaction should be memorable. And you can’t teach that.
