The new Facebook iOS app was released on Thursday and with it came vastly faster speeds and better integration for built-in iPhone hardware. With that mobile hassle out of the way, Facebook is now asking, urging, and even ordering employees to jump over to Android devices.

So why the change in directive? According to Business Insider, the company is not in a fight with Apple or attempting to ditch iOS based programs in the future. Instead, Facebook employees are being asked to jump head first into the deep end of Android development.

Apparently the Facebook OS app for Google Android is so bad that Facebook hopes employees will use the subpar application on a regular basis and therefore get serious about improving the mobile application for their own good.

Diving into the app on a regular basis means employees will be more likely to discover bugs and fix them more quickly based on day-to-day use.

According to the company, the practice of jumping in head first is called “dogfooding,” which comes from the phrase “eating your own dog food.”

Facebook is hardly the first tech firm to use the dogfooding practice to developer a better product.

No word yet as to whether Facebook is paying for employees to change their devices from iOS to Android offerings.

In the meantime, I feel sorry for any Facebook employee forced to jump over to Blackberry or Windows Phones in the future.

Have you been happy with the new performance benchmarks set by yesterday’s iOS Facebook app release?
