Jennifer Lopez Rejects Undeserved ‘Diva’ Reputation In Hollywood

Jennifer Lopez has carried around a “diva” reputation for years. From her fancy tastes, to alleged “diva” demands that span to ridiculous tour riders, but these days, Lopez seems a little more low key. That said, Lopez says that she’s never earned or deserved her diva status.

The conversation of being a “diva” came up when the ladies spoke about sexism in the industry, and the differences in which they all experienced it. The chat happened as part of the Actress Roundtable which Lopez was a part of in addition to Kerry Washington, Sarah Paulson, Constance Zimmer, Regina King, Kirsten Dunst, and Julianna Margulies. Lopez said that she has experienced sexism in the way she’s treated differently from men.

Instead, Lopez says that if anything, she just cared or was passionate about the projects she’s worked on, which might have lead to her diva status.

“I got a moniker of being ‘the diva,’ which I never felt I deserved — which I don’t deserve — because I’ve always been a hard worker, on time, doing what I’m supposed to do, and getting that label because you reach a certain amount of success,” said Lopez.

Paulson interjected, “And you care about something enough to give your opinion.” That’s when Lopez expanded on her thoughts on how she’s experienced sexism in the industry.

“Even sometimes I felt crippled to voice my opinion, especially because certain directors and the boys’ club that they form can make you feel like, ‘Oh, I can’t say anything.’ I was always fascinated by how I could see [a man] being late or being belligerent to a crew and it being totally acceptable; meanwhile, I’d show up 15 minutes late and be berated. And you watch this happen over and over and over again. Like, we’re not allowed to have certain opinions or even be passionate about something, or they’ll be like, ‘God, she’s really difficult.’ It’s like, ‘Am I? Am I difficult because I care?'”

Back in April of 2013, J.Lo’s diva status reared its ugly head yet again when the New York Post reported that her list of requests for her performance at India’s Premier League Cricket Tournament, was out of control.

“The demands made on behalf of Jennifer were outrageous. She effectively priced herself out of the event. It was an idiotic move because the audience for this event is huge. It’s like the Super Bowl halftime show. Last year it drew 56 million viewers,” a source told Page Six.

The source continued:

“An offer was made to perform; the date conflicted with Jennifer’s current music-recording schedule for an album due this summer.”

In another instance, back in 2011, J. Lo was supposed to go back to the Bronx to tape a Fiat commercial. In the commercial, Lopez is seen driving around her block, but when fans gathered on the streets to see the superstar they only saw a body double. The report got so much backlash that Fiat released a statement about the commercial.

“Both commercials featuring Jennifer Lopez were indeed filmed in the Bronx as well as outside locations. As you may know, in today’s world, people are increasingly mobile and their work takes them to a variety of locations. As a result, we took the opportunity to film wherever Ms. Lopez was working at the time to accommodate her schedule.”
