Home Depot Employee Emulates Donald Trump In Protest, Sparks Outrage With ‘America Was Never Great’ Hat

Staten Island Home Depot employee Krystal Lake is in the midst of a social media hurricane of outrage. She wore a hat to work Sunday morning mocking Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, and it backfired on her horribly, as she’s gotten death threats and nasty messages.

Krystal Lake, 22, never thought her protest would draw so much hate. The ill-fated hat bore the words “America was never great,” a parody of sorts on Trump’s “Make America Great Again.” This may be a sign that the Republican presidential candidate is gaining more support than many would like to admit.

When Donald Trump began his presidential campaign, he drew a cloud of angry responses with a statement about illegal Mexican immigrants and his personal views about them. Even though he started the statement with how there are some good ones, the message still managed to anger the Hispanic population of the United States.

This is similar to how the internet reacted to Home Depot employee Krystal Lake. She had her own reaction to the public outcry.

“The point of the hat was to say America needs changing and improvement. I don’t think it’s a positive message to say, ‘Let’s look to the past.’ Everyone kept asking me if I was on Facebook or Twitter, which I hadn’t been, and then I saw how many people were sharing [the picture] and that it was going viral. I was honestly shocked – I didn’t expect any of this to happen.”

With the general hate that Donald Trump has gained over his poor choice of words and public shenanigans, one might be as shocked as the Staten Island Home Depot employee that he’s gained just as much support. His campaign slogan is generally pointing to how he wants to bring back elements of what the United States used to be.

Some might not like that idea, considering how the rights of many have only recently been approved, such as gay and lesbian couples’ right to be married and transgenders’ right to use the public restroom of their choice. The latter is still under debate in the wake of retail chain Target’s refusal to adhere.

If we go far enough back, the United States even had slavery legal at one point, and women couldn’t vote. Technically, if you look back, many groups in this nation have been slowly gaining respect and legal rights in recent years. The idea of making America great “again” is mostly debatable.

On the other hand, Krystal’s hat slogan “America was never great” could be seen as generally unpatriotic, insulting the United States’ proud history as a nation based on freedom.

Home Depot employee Lake has stated that she will continue to wear the hat.

“Trump is very rash and in your face, but when someone else has a message against him, his supporters can’t take the criticisms. For the past two months, there have been a few people I work with wearing ‘Vote for Trump’ pins on their uniforms. But no one ever says anything to them.”

Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes made a statement on the company’s behalf.

“We appreciate and understand the concerns of our loyal customers. In terms of the message, our associates are not permitted to wear items that reflect political statements.

“Unfortunately, no one on our management team saw her wearing the hat – otherwise, they would have had her remove it immediately.”
