Greensburg, IN – Convicted mom Kristine Bunch was released from prison after 16 years behind bars and is facing a new trial in the death of her toddler son in a trailer fire in 1996.

The convicted mom released said she was “in shock” when originally arrested and tried for the blaze that killed her 3-year-old son Tony, a fire that investigators say Bunch set after pouring kerosene in the tot’s bedroom and other areas of the trailer.

But nearly two decades later, the 38-year-old convicted mom released from jail has a shot at a new trial after it was discovered the evidence used to convict Bunch was “outdated, weak and wrongly withheld from the defense.”

Ron Safer, an attorney for the convicted mom released from prison says that, while he is glad she is finally free, he is disappointed that a new trial is set to begin as he says there is no real evidence of arson. Bunch has said that she’s very interesting in exploring a world that looked completely different when she went to jail back in the mid-90s.

Wearing street clothes for the first time in the better part of two decades, a multicolor dress, Bunch planned to eat her first post-prison meal at a restaurant with her surviving teenage son and 58-year-old mother. After that, the released convicted mom says she plans to get a gander at cellphones, which were a rarity when she last saw the outside of a jail, and, of course, she wants to get on Facebook.

Bunch said:

“I can learn how to Facebook … All my friends tell me they’re on Facebook.”

Before she was released, the convicted mom earned a college degree in prison, and she hopes to go to law school to become a criminal attorney and help others in her situation.
