Margot Robbie Channels Christian Bale In ‘American Psycho’ For Vogue

Margot Robbie, star of the upcoming Suicide Squad and Vogue’s latest cover girl, appeared in a video for Vogue in which she spoofed a famous scene from the cult classic American Psycho. In the video, Robbie is “Australian Psycho.”

In the movie American Psycho, which is based on the classic, but controversial novel of the same name by just as controversial author Bret Easton Ellis, the character Patrick Bateman, portrayed by Christian Bale, narrates the rigorous morning routine he goes through each day to keep his good looks. This is the particular sequence that Robbie is spoofing in the new Vogue video.

In the video (via Collider), Robbie says, “My name is Margot Robbie. I’m 25-years-old. I believe in taking care of myself, in a balanced diet, [and] in a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll hold two cold spoons dipped in lapsang souchong over my eyes. I like to meditate while I work on my core even though I was born with a six-pack. In the shower, I use a deep-pore cleanser lotion, then a fossilized blue-green algae body scrub. I can’t remember the last time I washed my hair. It basically cleans itself now. Then, I apply a proprietary glycolic and pearl mask, which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use a small batch placenta-infused facial toner for that third-trimester glow without the cravings. Then, moisturizer. Then, an anti-aging eye balm, followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.”

“There is an idea of Margot Robbie – some kind of abstraction – but there is no real me, only an entity. Something illusory,” continues Robbie. “I know I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable. I simply am not there. I’m here.”

After Margot Robbie finishes speaking, the title comes up, as does a note that says, “With apologies to Bret Easton Ellis and American Psycho.”

For comparison, here’s the American Psycho scene Robbie recreated.

While it’s interesting to see a scene from American Psycho played out by a female (particularly since the novel was often labeled misogynistic by some critics), and for a mainstream women’s magazine no less, the film did actually have a sequel in which the titular psycho was portrayed by none other than Mila Kunis.

“Australian Psycho” was directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost for Vogue. American Psycho was directed by Mary Harron.

Margot Robbie can be seen in Suicide Squad, which will be released in the United States on August 5. The actress plays Dr. Harleen F. Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn). The film also stars Jared Leto, Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, and a number of others including Ben Affleck as Batman.

If you ask Margot Robbie, Harley Quinn is the best character in the film. In fact, she may even get her own spin-off film. As the Inquisitr recently reported, Margot Robbie apparently played a role in convincing Warner Bros. to consider a Harley Quinn movie as part of the DC Extended Universe, which may or may not also include Batgirl and Birds of Prey.

If that doesn’t work out, Margot Robbie has proven that she could play the lead role in an American Psycho remake should Hollywood be so inclined to go down that avenue. Given how frequently remakes are churned out, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if such a thing was already being considered. Who wouldn’t want to see Margot Robbie throw chainsaws at people?
