Zac Efron has opened up about staying sober in a new interview with Elle Magazine. While promoting Neighbors 2, the Seth Rogen comedy, Efron has been a little bit more candid than usual about his personal life and the steps that he’s making to change habits he once had.

Efron sought out treatment back in 2013 for his issues with sobriety, and now he’s finally opening up about his past struggles. In the interview, Efron said that he found structure in a substance-free life.

“What I found is structure. That led me to a balance of opposites. You get out of life what you put in.”

Zac continued to explain what this entailed. “There was a moment when my morning routine was, like, get up and Google yourself. But that stopped, dramatically and instantly, probably three years ago. I realized that viewing yourself through other people’s pictures is not living your own life. I wasn’t really being myself. A lot of my hobbies had gone out the window. I couldn’t skateboard or surf for fear of being followed. Crossing the line of fear is what leads to greatness.”

The last we heard about Zac Efron’s troubles was back in 2014, when he was caught fighting a homeless man in a rough part of Los Angeles. Later on he opened up in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, where he says the incident happened while he and a friend were looking for some food. A homeless man approached the car and his friend went out to fight the man, and that’s when Efron got involved.

“I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him.” The police were called and they broke up the fight, but Efron was punched in the face by the homeless man. At the time he called it, “the most terrifying moment in my life.”

Back then he also opened up about his sobriety and what it felt to join Alcoholics Anonymous. “I think it’s changed my life. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin.”

“When you have success young, and you accept the good things, you have to accept all of it. You have to accept the moments of glory but also a great responsibility.”

Along with his sobriety, Efron is focusing on his career. Currently, he’s promoting Neighbors 2 with Seth Rogen, and while he goes to great lengths to show off his buff body, surprisingly he would consider nudity as well if it was for the right role. Efron told Elle magazine, “Let’s just say I’m not opposed to anything, but if you’re gonna pull your d–k out, it’d better be for an Academy Award winning movie.”

He also opened up about his relationship with his parents, highlighting how his father supports him. He pointed to his grade school days, when he was the shortest one in school, and how he wasn’t the greatest at basketball which is surprising considering Efron donned a basketball uniform for High School Musical for years. He continued to explain how that support made him a better basketball player:

“I’d come home after practice and my dad would built a basketball hoop. Then we’d go out and shoot 100 free throws. Pretty soon, every time I got fouled I would make my free throws.”

Although Efron’s story is inspiring, many of his fans just want to hear about his biceps and when he’s showing them next. Well, odds are he’s going to be doing that a lot in the future as he’s currently filming Baywatch, the movie.
