Gwen Stefani Talks Blake Shelton Duet After Reuniting With Gavin Rossdale

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton debuted their new duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” on The Voice earlier this month, and during a new interview, the 46-year-old mother of three opened up about what led to the romantic song.

While Shelton spoke out about the track prior to its release, Gwen Stefani went into detail about their joint writing process for the first time while chatting with friend and talk show host Chelsea Handler earlier this week.

“The story is that he had written this song and sent it to me on my phone,” Gwen Stefani told Handler on Wednesday’s episode of her Netflix series, according to a People Magazine report on May 18. “He’s like I wrote this song and I was like ‘Whoa what if I don’t like it, huge turn off!’ I listened to it and thought ‘Oh my god I love this.’ He said ‘Write the rest of it.'”

At the time Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton teamed up for their song, Stefani was fresh off her divorce from Gavin Rossdale, the father of her three sons, Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2, and feeling insecure about her song writing ability.

“I was really insecure about writing,” Gwen Stefani admitted. “There was such a drought of time when I was so insecure. I think when you have a really long year you start to compete with your own self and get insecure about I did that but how did I do that?”

Gwen Stefani and Rossdale parted ways in August of last year, but according to a report by Us Weekly in November 2015, their marriage faced turmoil in February, when a staff member told Gwen Stefani about an alleged affair her husband was having with their former nanny, Mindy Mann.

In addition to Gwen Stefani’s comments about her insecurities, her boyfriend, Shelton, also admitted to being nervous about releasing his duet with Stefani.

“We’re a little bit nervous about it, but nervous in a way that we can’t wait and nervous in a way that we hope people think it’s as good as we think it is,” Shelton told People Magazine earlier this month.

According to Shelton, he and Stefani channeled their deepest emotions while writing “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and opened up “about some serious insecurities that we had when we first started down this road with each other.”

Just weeks before Gwen Stefani parted ways with Rossdale, Shelton announced he and his former wife, Miranda Lambert, were ending their marriage after just four years.

In other Gwen Stefani news, she and ex-husband Rossdale recently reunited in Los Angeles. As the Daily Mail reported on May 16, Gwen Stefani looked “visibly upset” as she left the Mulholland Estates after meeting with her former partner. However, in photos of her ex, Rossdale looked happy and even waved to photographers.

Gwen Stefani has remained silent in regard to Rossdale’s alleged affair with Mann since the news broke, but she has hinted at a betrayal in numerous interviews and on her new album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like.

In the coming months, Gwen Stefani is expected to continue to promote her new album and will begin touring the country in July. As for her possible return to The Voice, that has yet to be confirmed, and during Season 11, which begins filming later this year, two new cast members will be added to the show.
