Elton John Confirmed To Star In ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’

Last month, there were rumors about Sir Elton John joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, as The Inqsuitr reported. Now, those rumors can be put to rest, as Elton John himself confirmed it on his official Instagram account.

Yesterday, Elton John took to Twitter and posted a teaser from Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It simply read, “Wednesday night’s alright for fighting,” which is a play on Elton John’s 1973 song entitled “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” that appeared on his album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The post also shows Elton’s signature star-shaped sunglasses in red, white, and blue.

On the caption, Elton John wrote, “It’s been a long time since Tommy….. # Kingsman,” referring to his movie role in the 1975 British musical film entitled Tommy.

The same was done by Channing Tatum when he confirmed that he will be appearing in the Kingsman sequel. His post read, “My momma always told me the British gave us Southerners our good manners.”

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is the sequel to the 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service. In an interview with ABC News Radio, the film’s director, Matthew Vaughn, said that he already had Elton John in mind as early as the first Kingsman movie. Vaughn had the idea of adding a subplot to the film wherein a celebrity would be kidnapped.

“I had an idea of, who’s the worst celebrity you’d want to have locked in a cell? And I came up with Elton John, and having Elton John throwing these huge tantrums. And then I wanted to do an action scene of Elton John kicking the living daylights out of people.”

The idea was ultimately scrapped from the first film due to two reasons, as the director explained.

“First of all, the celebrities said no. And then I just got uncomfortable with, how do you have celebrities playing themselves, opposite famous actors playing another role? The suspension of disbelief suddenly becomes harder to pull off.”

The idea may not have interested Elton John the first time around, but this time, the singer agreed to star in the sequel. Since Vaughn has already revealed his scrapped plans for the first movie, fans can assume that he has come up with something different to bring Elton John into the story, but it has not been revealed whether he will be playing himself or a character.

In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Taron Egerton reprises his role as Eggsy, who is now an official member of the secret service. Mark Strong will be returning as Merlin, too. And although Colin Firth’s character died in the first movie, Taron Egerton posted an Instagram image with a hint of Firth’s return. The image read, “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated” and was accompanied with the caption, “A message from an old friend.”

Aside from Elton John, other new names who have been confirmed to star in Kingsman: The Golden Circle include Pedro Pascal as Jack Daniels, Halle Berry as a member of the CIA, and Channing Tatum. Coming Soon also reports that Julianne Moore will be the film’s villain.

Filming for Kingsman: The Golden Circle has already started. A few days ago, Channing Tatum was seen on set in London wearing a gray suit, black-rimmed eyeglasses, and a bowler hat.

The first Kingsman movie made $414 million in worldwide box office sales, which is more than five times its $81 million budget. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 16, 2017.
