With Mitt Romney out fundraising President Barack Obama, the Democrats campaign advisers have turned to a new form of money collecting — text messaging.

After months of what nearly amounts to email spamming, the campaign is now allowing text messages to be used when donating up to $50 per month for a maximum of $200 through the election cycle.

The move marks the first time someone can donate to a political campaign via text message. Simply send the word “Give” to 62262 and follow the onscreen instructions. In case you were wondering, 62262 translates on your cellular phone to “Obama.”

Because the donation is made through text messaging, the customer simply pays for their donation alongside their regular cellular bill.

While text messaging donations have long been used by disaster relief and other not-for-profit groups, they were just recently approved for use in elections. With the Federal Election Commission on board, it’s believed that the Mitt Romney campaign will soon roll out a text messaging donation platform of their own.

Wireless carriers not only help Obama raise money, they will actually earn a small percentage of each donation. Essentially, the carrier collects the donation and then sells that donation to the campaign for a third-party processing fee.

When asked if paying a fee is a smart decision, an Obama spokesperson says the campaign will “pay the most competitive rates available in the marketplace to ensure our supporters have the greatest impact with their contribution.”

Obama supporters can expected to see various print and media ads urging them to donate via text messaging.

Here’s to hoping the Obama campaign finally slows down with its desperate email attempts; it’s starting to get really annoying.
