Alanis Morissette has been very public about raising her son Ever Imre, 2, but she hasn’t opened up about the struggle she had immediately after his birth in 2010 until now. Morissette, who’s getting ready to release her new album, opened up to ET Canada about her bout with postpartum depression and the struggle she endured because of it.

“I just thought it was a swampy chapter, if I soldiered it out, that it would go away,” said Morissette, who’s single Guardian, is on the profound affect of being a mother. However, it hasn’t always been easy  for Alanis, and she came to found that her postpartum depression was serious, “I came to realize that the longer I waited, the more intense it would become.”

By being open about her struggle with motherhood, Alanis hopes to be a voice for other mothers who are experiencing the same struggle as she did, by urging mothers to seek help if they experience the signs of postpartum depression.

“I think if there is any goal in me talking about it, it would be to eradicate the shame around it,” she explains. “It’s just what happens sometimes and, for me, I just waited way too long to reach out for help.”

Alanis Morissette isn’t the only celebrity to speak out about their experience with postpartum depression. Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about her struggle after the birth of son Moses, as well as Brooke Shields who went head to head with Tom Cruise after seeing treatment with medication and therapy.

Alanis Morissette’s new album is set to release on August 28.
