‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Meredith’s Latest Hookup Might Shake Things Up [Spoilers]

If you haven’t seen Grey’s Anatomy’s episode titled “At Last”, you may want to stop reading, because we’re about to spoil a few key plot points.

On last week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith had her second hookup since losing her husband Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey). The teaser promised one shocking hookup and two proposals. Well, it looks like Grey’s Anatomy definitely delivered, but it looks like that hookup between Meredith and Dr. Riggs isn’t going to come without consequences.

Was it steamy? Sure. Did audiences cheer? Well, from the looks of it, it seems like many were excited to see Meredith fall into the arms of another hunky doctor, but it sounds like there’s one doctor who won’t be too thrilled about the news, and that’s Meredith’s half-sister Maggie. As we know, Maggie has a crush on Dr. Riggs, and for a while, it looked like Maggie and Riggs were going to hook up, so fans were shocked when Meredith was pressed up against a car in the parking lot of Sloan Grey Memorial.

Grey’s Anatomy’s own Kelly McCreary, who plays Maggie, spoke about Meredith and Nathan’s hookup and what that might mean for Meredith’s relationship with Maggie down the line. TVLine spoke to McCreary, who had this to say about Maggie’s state of mind. If you need a refresher, Maggie recently split from DeLuca, so she’s in a fragile place.

“She expresses that a lot in the finale, so [when she finds out] ultimately that it may not be a chance for her to be in love, I think she’s going to be heartbroken.”

She continued, “I think that the next phase of Maggie and Meredith’s relationship is going to [involve them] having to draw some boundaries around their relationship. I guess the question is, does she value her relationship with Meredith more than she values her desire to find love, and does she believe that Riggs is the right match for her?”

It’s unlikely we’ll find out all the answers to those questions by the end of the finale. In fact, it’s likely that some of these questions will be answered going into the 13th season, considering Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for another season on ABC. As of right now, we don’t know if Meredith and Dr. Riggs’ hookup is a one-time thing or if this is a physical attraction that will be explored and perhaps grow deeper.

That said, it’s not just Maggie who will be hurt by this hookup. As we know, before she left, Cristina told Meredith to look after her ex Owen, and right when Riggs entered the hospital, it was easy to tell that there was bad blood between the two. As it turns out, Owen holds Riggs responsible for the death of his sister, so there’s a question of whether or not Owen will be angry with Meredith if he finds out about the hookup.

Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Meredith’s mindset. Pompeo said that Riggs is a “safe” person to sleep with because there’s no potential there, as opposed to Dr. Will Thorpe, would she slept with weeks prior and freaked out because there was potential to love him.

“Now we’re going to see Meredith have flings with safer people who she knows she can’t fall in love with, and know she can’t really be with, a.k.a Riggs. Riggs is super safe because everybody hates him.”

While we don’t have many answers surrounding the finale, we do know that there will be a time jump, which will center around Owen and Amelia’s impulsive wedding.
