‘New’ Tag Team On ‘WWE RAW’ — More Matches Booked For ‘Extreme Rules’?

Running WWE Monday Night RAW alongside his sister Stephanie, Shane McMahon is ushering in the “New Era” of WWE talent, which has included The Bullet Club (AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows), Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady, Baron Corbin, Apollo Crews, and Dana Brooke. Set to debut less than a week before WWE Extreme Rules 2016, The Shining Stars will be in action on Monday Night RAW. But most members of the WWE Universe are fully aware that this isn’t a “new tag team” at all.

Meanwhile, Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho haven’t officially been scheduled for a match at Extreme Rules, despite The Lunatic Fringe being all over the promotional material. Headlined by Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, what other matches will be added to Sunday’s card on tonight’s WWE RAW?

In addition to The Shining Stars, a quick review of what can be expected on RAW is below, as well as the updated match-list for Extreme Rules. As the WWE heads back to the East Coast for this weekend’s event, Monday Night RAW airs live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The Shining Stars make their “debut” on WWE Monday Night RAW

For weeks now, the WWE has been airing vignettes featuring Primo and Epico talking about how great Puerto Rico is — how it’s the “shining star of the Caribbean.” Demonstrating how great the food is and how great the people of Puerto Rico are, the Colons called their apparent homeland the “shining star” so many times that it should have been obvious it was going to be their tag team name.

For the last week, WWE has been promoting the “debut” of the Shining Stars for Monday Night RAW, but that doesn’t feel like an accurate way to describe the situation. It’s one thing to talk about the debut of someone who just came up from NXT, but these two guys have competed under the WWE umbrella — at Monday Night RAW and even WrestleMania — under multiple aliases before.

The last time the WWE Universe saw the Colons, they were Los Matadores, an update on Tito Santana’s “El Matador” gimmick from the 90s, with the addition of a sidekick dressed as a bull. Originally booked simply as The Colons, Primo and Epico earned the title of the first Unified Tag Team Champions at WrestleMania 25.

Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho at WWE Extreme Rules 2016?

As of Monday morning, Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho do not have a match confirmed for Extreme Rules. While there were only three weeks between WWE Payback and WWE Extreme Rules, it seems odd that they wouldn’t book the match more than six days before the event. Given Ambrose’s treatment of Y2J’s $15,000 jacket and Jericho having the Lunatic Fringe wrapped in a straight jacket, is there some sort of jacket-related stipulation they’re building towards at Extreme Rules?

Dana Brooke and Emma (EnD)

So far, only five matches have been confirmed for Sunday, a match for each of the WWE championships. Will Dana Brooke make her WWE PPV debut? Could a team like the Gorgeous Truth or Social Outcasts face the Shining Stars? Could Big Cass get in on some singles action while Enzo Amore heals from injury?

Monday Night Raw preview

According to WWE.com’s official Monday Night RAW preview, there are at least five things you can count on the WWE addressing tonight:

  • “The Club” should be in full force, despite AJ Styles having refrained from in-ring action over the last week or so. How will Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and The Usos figure into Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles on Sunday?
  • Kofi Kingston recently lost in singles competition to Aiden English. How will The New Day respond to the Vaudevillains on RAW?
  • Who will Becky Lynch find to help her take on “EnD” (Emma and Dana)?
  • Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose are far from through with each other. What kind of match will be booked at Extreme Rules for these two?
  • The Shining Stars are apparently going to be in action, but the WWE hasn’t specified their opponents. How will the WWE Universe respond to the repackaged Colons?
