As NFL Training Camps open up, QB battles emerge

All across the United States this week NFL training camps are set to open. As each team’s rookie and veterans report for duty, a few QB position battles always open up. This year there are two that will be very interesting.

The first revolves around the Cleveland Browns. Of course it wouldn’t be NFL training camp with out a QB position battle for the Browns. Not only do they have a new head coach in Eric Mangini but two QB prospects that must battle each other to win the starting job.

Anderson, entering his 6th NFL season, has experience on his side but his overall career stats are not that impressive. In 2008 Anderson played in 10 games earning a QB rating of 66.5 while throwing for 1,615 yards and 9 touchdowns. Brady on the other hand is entering his third season as an NFL QB, and playing in 6 2008 games he racked up a QB rating of 66.6 while throwing for 518 yards and two touchdowns.

Either one of these men could end up being the starting Browns QB, and only a lengthy camp battle will be able to determine the eventual winner.

In Tampa Bay new head coach Raheem Morris has a three way battle between Luke McCown, Bryon Leftwich, and Rookie QB Josh Freeman. Of the three Leftwich has the most experience but whomever Morris decides can get the job done will eventually win the job.

Leftwich is entering his 7th NFL season and his now on his third team. After playing OK in a few starts last year with the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, Bryon is looking to regain a starting role that he held for parts of four season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His career numbers reveal a QB rating of 80.3; with 9,624 yards , 54 TD’s and 38 INT’s.

McCown is beginning his 6th NFL season and has never showed any of the promise he had when the Browns drafted him in the 4th round in 2004. At this point McCown seems likely to end the back up. Of course the dark horse in this race is 2009 first round pick (17thoverall) could surpass both. Of course that is assumning Tampa Bay can get him inked to a deal before the start of their camp.

In the end though, these kind of QB battles are waht make NFL training camps so intriquing.
