ESPN is reporting that Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden was booted from practice by Coach Pat Shurmur on Wednesday for being too “rough” with one of his teammates.

While details surrounding Haden’s temporary banishment are still a bit hazy at the moment, CBS Sports alleges that the incident occurred after a hard tackle by Haden on rookie WR Travis Benjamin in the end zone in 7-on-7 drills.

Apparently, Haden had previously been warned about pulling teammates’ jerseys. So, after taking Benjamin down during a red-zone drill, Shurmur and Haden “exchanged heated words” before the cornerback was dismissed to the locker room.

”I’m not going to talk about it,” Shurmur said of the incident in a post-practice news conference. ”That’s between me and the player. I have a great deal of respect for Joe. If you want details, you’re going to have to find it on Twitter.”

”My only apology is that I used bad language and the fans were here to see it. Joe’s a great competitor and I appreciate what he does and who he is and that’s the last you’ll hear me talk about it.”

Despite the squabble between Shurmer and his star athlete, the coach was quick to laud Haden’s overall performance for the summer.

“Joe’s had a great camp,” he said. “He’s challenged receivers, he came in in great shape. I told him that ‘you got to become the best Joe you can be.’”

Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson added that it’s not unusual for drama to unfold during camp and that Shurmur and Haden will likely patch their differences in due time.

“I think they both realize after they settled down it was a little bit overboard,” Jackson said. “But things happen and words were said, and once we get in the locker room, it’ll be over with.”
