Could One Direction Reunite To Attend The Billboard Music Awards?

Just 12 short months ago, One Direction fans were still reeling from the shock of Zayn Malik walking out on the band. For the most part, One Direction singers Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan had kept their own council over Malik’s departure, but they chose the Billboard Music Awards to pay tribute to Zayn. As the Telegraph reported at the time, One Direction were collecting the award for best duo or group when Liam spoke up to say that he wanted to share the award with his “brother Zayn.”

“This one is for the fans but there is one more person we want to share this with and that’s our brother Zayn.”

Last year, One Direction picked up the awards for Top Duo or Group and for the Top Touring Artist, and they are nominated in both categories again. Given the huge numbers of industry awards that One Direction have won, who would bet against them bagging the Billboard awards again this year?

As Sugarscape recently reported, this year’s Billboard Music Awards could be very special for One Direction. This year could see One Direction become Billboard record breakers. If One Direction scoop the top Duo/Artist trophy, they’ll overtake Destiny’s Child as the band who’ve taken it home the most times. That would be quite a feat for a band who are not together at the moment.

Obviously, One Direction fans will be hoping that the boys can bag the awards. Breaking the record would be a huge bonus, but what fans would like to see more than anything is One Direction all being together to collect the gongs. Hope was high that all of the One Direction boys would reunite in London back in February when they picked up a couple of Brit awards. As was reported by Metro, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne attended the awards to collect the prize on behalf of One Direction. Fans were hugely disappointed to find out that Harry Styles did not attend despite being in London. Niall Horan was backpacking in Thailand at the time.

One Direction look like strong favorites to win the Top Duo or Group with their chief rivals likely to be Maroon 5 and Twenty One Pilots. The Top Touring Artist category looks more open with One Direction up against Taylor Swift, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, and U2, all of whom had massive tours.

According to Billboard, fan interaction is hugely influential in deciding who the finalists are, and in this respect, One Direction have a huge advantage. One Direction fans have proven time and again that they are a huge force on social media. Between them, the One Direction boys have over 100 million followers on Twitter alone.

“Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music.”

This year’s Billboard Music Awards will be screened live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 22. While One Direction are currently on hiatus, the Billboard Music Awards are a huge deal, and One Direction are perhaps more likely than not to win an award.

All four One Direction members have been spending time in L.A. in recent months, but sadly there has been no reported occasion where they have got together. Amidst the seemingly constant rumors of tensions, hatred, and jealousy between the members of One Direction, the Billboard Music Awards would be a wonderful opportunity for the band to show their fans that they are still one.

One Direction fans would like nothing better than to see that the boys are still a band of brothers.
