Todd Akin is still under fire for his “legitimate rape” comment and complete misunderstanding of the female reproductive system, and now he’s speaking out against demands for his resignation, specifically against GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Akin appeared on the Sean Hannity radio show this morning where he proclaimed:

“Why couldn’t he run his race, and I’ll run mine?”

Akin than continued to stick behind his excuse that his comment was an error of words:

“You misspeak one time, one place, one word, and all of a sudden you have everybody saying you endanger the entire party. Don’t you think there’s a little hyperbole going on here?”

Akin’s comment against Mitt Romney comes one day after the presidential hopeful clearly called for his resignation, noting:

“As I said yesterday, Todd Akin’s comments were offensive and wrong and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country. Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.”

Akin then denied that his comments and political race would hurt the GOP across the board come election time in November. Akin points to one poll which showed he was still ahead in his race.

Polling numbers, of course, are extremely hard to gauge three months ahead of an election, and the press has already turned against Akin. The Cook Political Report, for example, has pushed the race to “toss-up” to “like Democrat” despite polling results.

Akin has until September 25 to pull out of the race by filing a court order. If he makes that choice by next Tuesday, he can leave the race without paying the bill to print new ballots.
