‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spoilers: Season 12 Episode 23 Recap: ‘At Last’

The end of Season 12 of Grey’s Anatomy is quickly approaching. While last week’s episode focused on Arizona Robbins and Callie Torres’ custody battle for their daughter, Sofia, this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy is all about relationships.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

ABC shared the following synopsis of Grey’s Anatomy, Episode 1223.

“Owen and Amelia take their relationship to the next level; Alex gains some clarity on his future with Jo; and Callie and Arizona continue to struggle with the current custody arrangement.”

At the beginning of Episode 1223 of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith Grey sees Owen Hunt in the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital parking lot, selling the trailer Owen bought from her deceased husband, Derek. Meredith seems upset to be losing this memory of Derek and her mood automatically goes south.

Penny Blake and Callie struggle to deal with the outcome of the custody battle. Now that Callie has lost custody of Sofia, her only options are to move to New York with Penny and leave Sofia behind, or stay at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital so she can have time with Sofia. Callie chooses her daughter, but the choice is causing extreme strain on Callie and Penny’s relationship.

It almost seems as if Callie blames Penny for the loss of Sofia, even though Callie made the decision on her own to move to New York with Penny and fight to take Sofia with her. Callie eventually decides to end her relationship with Penny. Grey’s Anatomy fans will rejoice, as Penny is a hated character due to her involvement with Derek’s death.

Over surgery, Owen and Amelia Shepherd discuss his new house purchase. The conversation moves from her helping him pick out furniture, to her moving in, and eventually to the prospect of the two of them marrying. Meredith learns about the conversation and her negative mood from the morning takes over.

As the day goes on, Meredith approaches Amelia and tells her that she is stealing her life. She is living in her house, she is dating her best friend Christina’s ex-boyfriend, and she took Derek’s job.

Last week on Grey’s Anatomy, guest star Wilmer Valderrama returned to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as Kyle Diaz, with more complications from his multiple sclerosis. After Stephanie Edwards dumped him in a letter she left by his hospital bedside while he was sleeping, Kyle wanted nothing to do with her. This week, however, Kyle and Stephanie finally move past what happened and mend their relationship right before he heads in for another surgery. Unfortunately, Kyle and Stephanie will never have a chance to see where their relationship could have gone, as he does not make it through the surgery.

Meanwhile on Grey’s Anatomy, relationships are both blooming and drastically falling apart. In a shocking twist, Alex Karev tells Jo Wilson he needs an answer, immediately, on his marriage proposal. Jo tells him, “no.” This wasn’t the only marriage proposal, though, as Amelia proposed to Owen in front of his new house. Though viewers never heard him say “yes,” the preview for next week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy shows Amelia freaking out before her wedding.

In an unexpected hook up, Nathan calls Meredith out on her bad mood while they are in the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital parking lot. The argument turns into a full on make out session that looks like it will lead to more.

Episode 1223 of Grey’s Anatomy saw the end of Penny and Callie, Stephanie and Kyle, and Alex and Jo. Owen and Amelia are now engaged, and Meredith and Nathan are on the verge of hooking up. Could there be hope for Jackson and April? The preview for next week’s episode shows April will go into labor at Amelia’s wedding. Will the birth of their baby bring “Japril” back together?

Don’t miss the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, at 8/7c on ABC.
