‘New Girl’ Season 6 Episode 1 To Air In September? Nick And Jess Finally Happening In Premiere
Although the Season 5 finale of New Girl aired just a couple of days ago, fans of the hit Fox series are already eager to find out what’s in store for Nick and Jess in Season 6. Series creator Liz Meriwether revealed that Megan Fox’s Reagan will not be able to stand in the couple’s way when the show returns later this year.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Girl showrunner Liz Meriwether hinted that Nick and Jess could finally happen come Season 6. She explained that they have always known that they will be revisiting the relationship soon enough. It was just a matter of timing.
“For me, it’s the heart of the show. I knew we were going to come back to it, but we had to figure out a way to get back into it that feels good for the show and the characters and will allow us to have stories,” she said.
In the New Girl Season 5 finale, we saw Sam (David Walton) break up with Jess (Zooey Deschanel), which made her realize that she still has feelings for Nick (Jake Johnson). Meriwether explained that all that has happened between the two characters, the breakups and the hookups, have led them to this moment.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Liz Meriwether revealed that the New Girl Season 5 finale was a clear indication that the door is not totally shut on Nick and Jess. Now that Jess is the one who is pining for Nick’s attention, things are definitely about to get even more exciting come Season 6.
Meriwether also shared that introducing a new love interest for Nick, Megan Fox’s Reagan, is necessary to move the story forward.
“Nick dating Reagan shows how much he has grown too; he has the confidence to be with her. In order to get Nick and Jess back together, both of the characters [would need] to grow a lot and change or realize what went wrong in the last relationship.”
Meriwether also hinted that New Girl Season 6 will be a big one for Nick and Jess “shippers.”
“Next year, the door is definitely open, and Jess is probably standing in the doorway.”
While Nick planned to follow Reagan to New Orleans to see if there is a future between them, E! News claimed that it is only a matter of time before the two break up. They pointed out that Megan Fox will not end up signing for a “sizeable arc” on New Girl Season 6. Plus, there is always the issue of the Transformers star being pregnant with her third baby.
Season 5’s “Landing Gear” marks the 116th episode of New Girl. With all that has happened, one can assume that Meriwether, along with the writers, know what is going to happen in the series finale. She, however, explained that it is always best to expect the unexpected, adding that she always plays it by ear.
Although Meriwether wrote the script for the Season 5 finale even before the renewal was confirmed, she shared that Fox has given them a heads-up that there will be a Season 6 for New Girl. She explained that she wanted to give fans a great finale, something that a lot of shows don’t get the opportunity to do.
When asked about the New Girl Season 6 premiere, Meriwether shared that they still have to iron out details for the next season. She, however, hinted that Episode 1 will most likely air either this September or January, 2017.
