‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Will Welcome A New Mutant Into The Fold Via Post-Credits Scene

With Captain America: Civil War dominating cinemas around the world, it’s easy to forget that Marvel have another movie on the verge of release. X-Men: Apocalypse, the third in the second trilogy of X-Men movies, will be released in the UK next week, and despite a majority of mixed critical reviews, the film is gaining its fair share of the attention.

The X-Men franchise has enjoyed a strong resurgence since Bryan Singer returned to the helm to reboot proceedings, and the new instalment has people talking for one specific reason. Be warned, this article contains minor spoilers for X-Men: Apocalypse.

Marvel turned the post-credits sequence reveal into somewhat of an art form in recent years, and although competitor DC and Warner Bros. have yet to utilize this device and follow suit, it has become standard practice for Marvel and Fox’s superhero films. On that note, and with X-Men: Apocalypse approaching a release date, it has been revealed that a post-credit sequence in the movie will welcome a new mutant into the fold, one who could have major connections to future Marvel movies.

Marvel movies are notorious for featuring post-credit sequences. The latest from 20th Century Fox was ‘Deadpool.’ The character is connected to the ‘X-Men’ and may feature in a crossover next year. [Image via 20th Century Fox]

Speaking to Collider, producer Simon Kinberg offered a hint of what we can expect from the now-standard post-credit sequence.

“It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.”

Producers and directors, and everyone in between, always like to keep these teasing reveals relatively cryptic, but whoever Kinberg is referring to looks set to play a large, possibly key role in the X-Men franchise going forward. Speculation is already rife as to who the character will be based on Kinberg’s suggestions above. Gambit has a debut movie coming out next year, so introducing him would be a good call, and Wolverine is slated to round out a trilogy in due course, so could it be someone connected to him? Maybe a new villain could be teased for another X-Men movie — Mr. Sinister is a prime suspect, what with his connections to Apocalypse in the comics.

Thinking outside of the box, Deadpool 2 is currently in early development after breaking a ton of box-office records. Marvel have often refuted any claims that the Merc with a Mouth will ever appear in an X-Men movie, despite his tongue-in-cheek references to the mutant group in the first movie, but that news was quashed this week when the Daily Mail revealed that Deadpool will star in a big-budget crossover movie next year. The film’s $760 million-plus box-office haul might have helped fuel this potential collaboration.

There’s no doubt the R-rating would be a problem should this crossover occur, but stranger things have happened. With Cable heavily rumoured for Deadpool 2, something that was hinted at in Deadpool’s own post-credit sequence, it could be a chance to introduce him to the Marvel universe. Deadpool and Wolverine also share a popular love-hate relationship, so with a variety of comic connections between the properties and fans baying to see Deadpool drop in on the X-Men for a royal chit-chat, this could be an outside bet.

Whoever the character is, it seems like they have the potential to shake up the X-Men franchise. With the trilogy rounding out and several other characters about to be introduced into the fold, it could be a chance to push the franchise in a different direction. You can find out who the character is when X-Men: Apocalypse is released in the UK on May 18 and U.S. theatres on May 27. Just remember to wait for the credits!
