One Direction Need To End Their Hiatus And End It Now

One Direction are currently on hiatus. It may only be a few months since One Direction parted to pursue their own interests for a while, but for One Direction fans, the break has already been too long. It seems that it isn’t just the fans who are missing One Direction — the media are too. Starved of real news about Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan, it seems that the silly season has already started when it comes to reporting about One Direction.

Let’s be frank: When One Direction announced that they were taking a break to pursue their own interests for a while, many fans were distraught. As their last tour drew to a close, U.K. tabloid the Sun declared open season on One Direction in a now-infamous article claiming that the boys hated each other. The die was cast, and the tone was set. For some sections of the media, reporting on One Direction was geared towards suggesting turmoil, bitterness, and jealousy within the band. At times, it seems like some people are determined to destroy the reputation of One Direction and its members.

In the early months of One Direction’s hiatus, Louis Tomlinson became the focus of reporting that was both nasty and vicious. When Harry Styles announced in January that he had sacked One Direction’s management team and appointed a new team to represent him for his solo work he was attacked for being disloyal. The clear implication was that Styles was the driving force behind One Direction’s split.

Of course, there is a pretty simple logic behind the way that One Direction are reported. One Direction have countless millions of fans across the world, and those fans have a nagging doubt in the back of their minds that says One Direction are over. Various members of One Direction have assured fans that they will return around this time next year, but there has been no clear indication as to what that will look like. That means One Direction fans are desperate for news about the band, leaving them vulnerable to claims that One Direction’s split will become permanent.

Those seeds are now firmly planted, and until such time as more definite news arises, the media realise that they can exploit fans fears over One Direction’s future at any time.

Those who do not follow One Direction closely may doubt that news about a pop band is of any real consequence. The fact is that One Direction have filled millions of column inches in the tabloid gossip columns since they were brought together as a group back in 2010. If you have any doubts as to just how prevalent One Direction stories are, just have a look at a few of the headlines from the past 24-hours.

The Sun reports that One Direction’s Harry Styles sends One Direction fans into a frenzy by having a haircut. Harry has indeed chopped off his long locks, and as reported by the Inquisitr earlier this week, he did so to support a charitable cause.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that Louis Tomlinson went shopping with Danielle Campbell. They also report that the One Direction star held hands with his girlfriend and even that Tomlinson “looked scruffy” as he enjoyed a night on the town. The Daily Mail has even thought it noteworthy that Tomlinson went for a coffee and that he bought beer in a grocery store.

Seventeen magazine are reporting that One Direction are to reunite this coming weekend. Before fans get too excited, the big One Direction reunion is as cartoon characters in a new episode of Family Guy, which is set to air on Sunday. Numerous outlets have worked themselves into a lather over the fact that One Direction’s Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson shared a bit of online banter about a forthcoming charity soccer match.

Unreality TV are gushing over the fact that Liam Payne shared an Instagram picture of himself with rumored girlfriend Cheryl Cole.

The point is that with One Direction on hiatus, the media is feeding fans on a diet of banality. No snippet of news or gossip goes unreported and the slightest snippet is sensationalized to make it seem like a major news item. The one thing that doesn’t seem in the slightest bit newsworthy when it comes to One Direction is music. That is rather odd when you are talking about a pop band.

One Direction need to end their hiatus and get back to doing what their true fans love them for: making music. To spare the sanity of One Direction fans, they should do it sooner rather than later.
