Kurt Sutter’s ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Mayans’ Gets A Script Order From FX

Kurt Sutter is coming back to FX again with his new Sons of Anarchy spinoff series titled Mayans MC. Although this is just the first step in a much longer process to get the show off the ground on FX, it is a major move for the famed TV series producer who has turned out some legendary television shows.

In recent years, Kurt Sutter has seemed to make FX his unofficial home for television production, having played such an integral role in the success of The Shield, then later turning around his own mega hit series with Sons of Anarchy. After Sons went off the air, Sutter also turned around another gritty TV show titled The Bastard Executioner, which did not do as well as his other projects, but still had the same intense dynamics inherent to his creations.

Now that Kurt Sutter has finally made the next move on a Sons of Anarchy spinoff series, Mayans MC is about to go into script production for the series and will likely be heading to their network airwaves, on cable, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Although Mayans MC will indeed take place in the Sons of Anarchy universe, it will be a completely different show, as Kurt Sutter himself described it. There is still going to be that raw and gritty tone present to the show, but it will be a different setting, different set, and a different pace. All of those factors combined will make for a uniquely different form of storytelling for the spinoff series.

In Sons of Anarchy, the Mayans MC were set up at the beginning of the series to be an adversary to SAMCRO. There was actually blood shed between the two rival motorcycle gangs that shared turf in central California. But eventually, Kurt Sutter wanted to bring the two together in some small way that would lead to peace between the two MCs and create a lasting bond that would benefit both clubs.

In the end, it was the Sons of Anarchy and the Mayans who could trust each other the most, outside of their own clubs. Also, with the Oakland charter of the Mayans MC being the most prominent on Sons of Anarchy, they will be the focus of the story with some expansion that Kurt Sutter hopes to create in a new long-lasting series that will further add to the Sons of Anarchy fictional folklore.

Elgin James will share credit with Kurt Sutter on the creation of the Mayans MC series and the two plan to bring a strong Latino voice to the show that will more accurately represent their culture.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter told THR. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

Kurt Sutter said that James will be that strong voice not just because he is Latino, but because he has grown up around the street element and he knows exactly what he is talking about when he lends his opinion to the story arcs.

Fans of Sons of Anarchy shouldn’t jump the gun with their excitement just yet. Keep in mind that is only a script order and the actual production of the Mayans MC series has not begun. If it does get a pilot order, then Mayans MC will be joining other major shows on the network including the mega hit horror anthology series American Horror Story.

FX has not officially given the Sons of Anarchy spinoff the green light yet, but if history is any indicator, then they are likely to give Kurt Sutter just about anything he asks for. That might have something to do with Sutter’s ability to turn just about anything he touches into a critical success.
