Rare Final Fantasy Cartridge Going To Auction For $50,000

The US version of Final Fantasy II by game developer Square was actually the Japanese version of Final Fantasy IV converted into English. The actual Japanese version of Final Fantasy II was never released in English in the United States, yet a single copy of the English translation exists.

Square had planned on releasing the game in the US but decided against it after the prototype cartridge was created. Now a well known collector is selling the cartridge at a cost of $50,000, although the game could fetch even more at auction.

The game is only revealed by a small sticker in the right hand corner of the cartridge which clearly states:

“Final Fantasy 2 Sample, copyright 1988, 1991 Squaresoft.”

The inside of the cartridge (pictured above) also labels the the cartridge at “FF2 NEW for CES.” Inside the circuitry lay a fully playable, complete, English-translated copy of the game released in Japan as Final Fantasy II. The game is even labeled on the inside “FF2 NES for CES.”

The game was built in 1991 for the Consumer Electronics Show; however, by the end of the year, Square decided to move onto Final Fantasy IV which would be released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System thanks to its advanced technology.

Rare videogames often fetch thousands of dollars at auction; however, those games typically tend to have been released to the general public in small numbers, not part of a prototype cartridge that was never released to the game buying segment.

Would you spend $50,000 on a super rare Final Fantasy game?
