New York – Law enforcement officials say that a set of human skeletal remains were found in a remote are of New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Monday night.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that maintenance workers stumbled upon the skeletal remains while clearing weeds, foliage and leaves beyond the airport’s fence. They were scattered within a 20 yard radius near the shoreline of a marshy area, reports MSNBC. One worker found what looked like a human bone while clearing the tall grass at the edge of Flushing Bay.

The Port Authority responded to the call from the maintenance worker and discovered more bones in at least 17 different places near the shoreline. The skeletal remains included a partial skull, and were turned over the the medical examiner’s office to determine whether or not they were human or animal bones, said authorities. The remains were confirmed a being human by the city medical examiner on Tuesday, reports NY1.

According to law enforcement officials, the remains were collected by an anthropologist from the medical examiner’s office. They are currently being analyzed and built into a full skeleton.

Currently, officials do not know if the remains are male or female, or how long they have been there, though they estimate that the skeletal remains have been there for at least a year. They are reviewing dental records and missing-persons cases in an effort to identify the victim, reports Fox News.
