Kerry Washington Second Pregnancy To Affect ‘Scandal’ Plot

Kerry Washington is pregnant after all! The Scandal star confirmed her pregnancy by appearing at the Met Gala with a baby bump, according to USA Today. But how will the 39-year-old actress’ pregnancy affect her character on ABC’s hit drama Scandal?

Rumors of Kerry Washington’s pregnancy first surfaced on the internet last Monday, but the Scandal actress didn’t leave her fans hanging for too long. Later the same day, she appeared on the red carpet at the Met Gala with a tiny baby bump, confirming the pregnancy rumors.

Kerry Washington appeared at the Met Gala in a tight Marc Jacobs dress, and the crowd went crazy when they realized the actress is expecting the second child with her husband, NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha.

Kerry Washington triggered pregnancy rumors when she made an appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. last weekend. It was the actress’ choice of dress as well as the way she held her clutch the entire time that made the crowd suspect there was something going on.

Kerry Washington and Asomugha have a 2-year-old daughter, Isabelle, who has rarely appeared in the public eye. It’s due to the actress’ approach to avoid family talk in her interviews as well as never taking selfies with her family or discussing her family members on social media.

And Kerry Washington wasn’t the only one who rocked her baby bump on the red carpet at the Met Gala. Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively, Sicario actress Emily Blunt, and House actress Olivia Wilde all boasted their baby bumps at the event.

And Scandal fans cannot but wonder what changes Kerry Washington’s second pregnancy will bring to the ABC hit series. How will showrunner Shonda Rhimes hide the actress’ baby bump, or won’t she?

The situation is somewhat similar to when Kerry Washington announced her first pregnancy in 2013. Scandal fans then wondered whether Rhimes was going to make Washington’s character pregnant too, or whether they would simply hide the constantly growing baby bump behind giant objects with the help of camera tricks.

And Rhimes opted for the latter. And while there is no doubt Scandal’s team did a great job at hiding Kerry Washington’s baby bump during Season 3, their camera tricks were somewhat too obvious.

And while Kerry Washington had to hide behind large chairs and lamps as well as be shot from the chest up during her first pregnancy, what will the actress’ second pregnancy mean for the show? Will Rhimes make Olivia Pope pregnant this time?

Rhimes has more options at hew disposal this time, according to Entertainment Weekly. The ABC show could get delayed and pushed to midseason, which would buy some time for Kerry Washington to deliver her second baby.

It would mean that Rhimes doesn’t need to make Olivia Pope pregnant and get distracted from the main plot of the show. It would also mean the character wouldn’t have to hide behind large objects once Kerry Washington starts filming again.

Scandal could also get its episode order reduced to about 18 episodes, just like ABC did during Kerry Washington’s first pregnancy, when Scandal Season 3 was trimmed to 18 episodes instead of the usual 22.

But Rhimes will most likely do the same she did in Season 3: just hide Kerry Washington’s baby bump with the help of camera tricks. And even though those attempts to trick viewers are hilarious at times, it’s still the most likely scenario for Washington’s second pregnancy.

But there is still a tiny probability that Rhimes could make Olivia pregnant too. In fact, Olivia was already pregnant on the show, but then she got an abortion.
