Macklin and the Eagles cannot reach agreement

This is sort of a weird story. The Philadelphia Eagles andfirst round draft pick (19th overall) Jeremy Maclin the WR from Missouri cannot come to terms on a contract. Not because the players is demanding the whole world, and not because the team is being stingy. The only reason this deal isn’t done is because the market has yet to be establishedfor 2009 first round draft picks.

Maclinwas the third WR taken in the 2009 draft; behind Darius Heyward Bey in Oakland, and Michael Crabtree to San Francisco. Neither of these players has yet to ink a deal. Further complicating matters is the fact that no WR’swere taken in the first round of the 2008 draft. That leaves player and team with no reference point to framework a dealaround.

On the high end of the scale number one overall pick, QB Matt Stafford (Detroit), got a 78 million dollar 6 year deal, on the low end the 32nd overall pick, Evander Hood DT (Pittsburgh) got a 11.3 million 5 year deal. Maclin at 19th overall stands to make a good deal more than that, because of his draft status and the position he plays.

In 2008 19th overall pick, OT Jeff Otah (Carolina), got a 14.4 million 5 year deal. that seems to indicate that Maclinshould get a deal around five years at at least 20 million overall with fifty percent of that in guaranteed money. At this point it does not seem that the Eagles are willing to pay that much.

Since Maclin wold give the Eagles a new dose of game breaking speed, and help out as a punt returner, this is a deal the Eagles need to get done. Maclin is projected as their third of fourth Wide out. Add to that the way this team hyped Maclin up coming out of the draft and the 20 million seems almost a lock.
