Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin was supposed to appear on Piers Morgan Tonight, but he apparently got a little camera shy before last night’s show. After outraging the American public by saying that “legitimate rape” rarely resulted in pregnancy, Akin decided to cancel his interview with Piers Morgan.

That, according to Morgan, makes him a “gutless little twerp.”

Morgan hosted his show last night next to an empty chair.

Morgan said:

“Congressman, you have an open invitation to join me in that chair whenever you feel up to it…. If you don’t keep your promise to appear on the show, then you are what we would call in Britain a gutless little twerp.”

Akin tried to apologize after making his remark, saying that it was clear that he “misspoke” and that he has “deep empathy” for any woman who gets raped or abused.

Akin said:

“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year.”

Still, several people are calling for Todd Akin to pull out of the senate race.

But that probably isn’t going to happen.

Akin released a new campaign ad today, apologizing for his statements and asking for forgiveness.
